Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on Queen’s statement: We can all live a life of service, Service is universal
Queen Elizabeth stated "it is not possible” for the Sussexes “to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service". To this, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle said “Service is Universal”.

Buckingham Palace released a statement on Friday confirming that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle won't return as working royals. The announcement took over the internet when it became official that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will in fact step down. Last year, Prince Harry and Meghan had shared their plans to step down, which came with a one-year review period. Queen Elizabeth had commented on Prince Harry and Meghan’s decision to step down with a written statement.
"Following conversations with The Duke, The Queen has written confirming that in stepping away from the work of The Royal Family it is not possible to continue with the responsibilities and duties that come with a life of public service," the palace statement said. As a response to the statement made by the palace, The Sussexes expressed their commitment to service, stating "We can all live a life of service. Service is universal." Prince Harry and Meghan's office also shared how the pair, regardless of their official role, continues to remain committed to their duty and service to the United Kingdom and around the world. Prince Harry and Meghan’s commitment to their duties received applause, as people discussed the matter online.
The prince will lose his honorary military appointments, which will be redistributed among working members of The Royal Family. Meanwhile, other trusts and patronages like The Queen's Commonwealth Trust, the Rugby Football Union, the Rugby Football League, the Royal National Theatre, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities will revert to Queen Elizabeth.
