It was on this day, 50 years ago, when promising Hollywood actress Sharon Tate was brutally murdered in her rented home in Los Angeles, shared with husband and director Roman Polanski. It was four members of the Manson Family (a cult headed by Charles Manson) including Tex Watson who murdered Sharon, three of her friends and an 18-year-old visitor. The then 26-year-old Tate was eight and a half months pregnant at the time while Roman was not home because he was shooting for a film in Europe.

The reason why Charles specifically carried out the murders in Sharon and Roman's rented home was that its previous renter was record producer Terry Melcher, who had snubbed Manson, a would-be musician which left him very disgruntled. On March 23, 1969, Manson briefly met Tate, after the cult leader showed up to 10050 Cielo Drive, Altobelli’s property, where he believed Melcher was staying. Other Manson Family murder victims included stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea and Vietnam veteran James L.T. Willett along with his wife Lauren Willett. The Manson Family Murders changed the landscape of Hollywood forever, as they were left in a state of disarray, especially after Sharon Tate's murder.

Remembering Sharon on her 50th death anniversary, the actress first started her career in television before venturing into the crazy world of movies. Tate was hailed as one of Hollywood's most promising newcomers and was praised for her comedic and dramatic acting performances. She met and fell in love with her The Fearless Vampire Killer (1967) director Roman Polanski as the two got married on January 20, 1968. Her acting credits include The Thirteen Chairs (1969), The Wrecking Crew (1968) and Valley of the Dolls (1967), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination in the Most Promising Newcomer – Female category.

However, Hollywood lost this promising newcomer on August 9, 1969. Speaking of Charles Manson, the criminal and cult leader was originally sentenced to death. However, when California invalidated the state's death penalty in 1972, he instead served a life sentence and died at the age of 83 on November 19, 2017. Manson became a part of pop culture with movies and television shows being inspired by the Manson Family Murders. These include Helter Skelter (1976) and Aquarius (2015). Taking this as his inspiration for his ninth directorial, Quentin Tarantino wrote Once Upon A Time In Hollywood with Margot Robbie essaying the role of Sharon Tate.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio as washed-up actor Rick Dalton while Brad Pitt is seen as Rick's stunt double Cliff Booth. Damon Herriman takes up the role of Charles Manson again as he played him in Mindhunter (2017) as well.
