The Odyssey: Lupita Nyong’o Confirmed to Play Helen of Troy and Her Sister Clytemnestra, Zendaya to Portray Athena
Ahead of the film’s July release, The Odyssey has confirmed the characters played by particular actors.
The Odyssey is one of the most, if not the most, anticipated films of the year. Academy winner Christopher Nolan returns to the big screens with a challenge on his hands and one that is far bigger and deeply rooted than any other that came before. He has taken on Homer’s Odyssey and turned it into an epic fantasy action film that brings on an ensemble cast. As the days to the film’s release come closer, more characters are being confirmed. In an interview with TIME, the filmmaker confirmed Lupita Nyong’o and Zendaya’s roles.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey reveals more characters
As per the latest update, Lupita Nyong’o has been confirmed to play Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. Moreover, actress Zendaya will be seen embodying the famed Athena, the goddess of wisdom, warfare, and handicraft. Helen of Troy is the wife of Menelaus (Jon Bernthal), the Greek king of Sparta, and is said to be the most beautiful woman in the world, who caused the war. Meanwhile, her sister Clytemnestra is Menelaus’ brother Agamemnon's wife.
Other confirmations include Samantha Morton’s Circe, who is a goddess and witch, as well as the roping in of Bill Irwin as the guide for the cyclops. Previous revelations include Matt Damon as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Odysseus's son, and Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Odysseus's wife, Telemachus's mother, and the queen of Ithaca. Another memorable actor last seen in the film’s trailer is Antinous, played by Robert Pattinson, one of Penelope's suitors.
The film also stars rapper Travis Scott in an unexpected casting of the star playing a bard, which Nolan calls ‘a nod towards the idea that this story has been handed down as oral poetry, which is analogous to rap.’
The Odyssey releases globally on July 17, 2026.
