Team India's World Cup campaign suffered a major setback as in form batsmen Shikhar Dhawan suffered an injury after being hit by a nasty delivery from Pat Cummins during his 109 ball 117 run knock against Australia at The Oval on Sunday. He, however, did not come out to field in the second innings. While the X-ray did not show any fracture, CT scans revealed otherwise and he is being monitored by specialists. The Indian think tank wasted no time and has called upon Rishabh Pant to be part of the side as a cover for injured Shikhar Dhawan.

When asked about the extent of the injury, Team India's Assistant coach Sanjay Bangar who addressed the media gathering ahead of the third game against New Zealand said that "The team management does not want to rule out the in form opener as he is too precious". He further added that, KL Rahul will take up Shikhar Dhawan's place and will open the innings with Rohit Sharma.

The team management is expected to take a call on Shikhar Dhawan in 10-12 days. Bangar also challenged KL Rahul to make full use of the opportunity and felt that he has the ability to fill the void left by Shikhar Dhawan who has amassed 3 centuries for India in World Cups.

He also added that "The opening batsmen have to be a bit circumspect when the conditions are cloudy and there are two new balls to tackle. If an opening bat is disciplined enough to tackle such challenging conditions then the team would be on a good spot at the end of 10-15 overs".

With Shikhar Dhawan ruled out of the game against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, it would be interesting to see as to who takes up the crucial number four spot.
