Team India's captain Virat Kohli revealed the reason as to why the team management wanted to persist with injured Shikhar Dhawan through the entire tournament and did not want to ask the ICC for an official replacement.

Addressing the media after the washout against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, Kohli said, "Hopefully, the injury heals quickly and Dhawan will be available for the latter half of our league games and semi-finals for sure. From that point of view, we want to hold him back, keep him here"

The skipper also heaped praise on Shikhar Dhawan's mindset, stating that his positive attitude will help him recover quickly. "He wants to play. I think that kind of mindset will help in healing the injury as well as he really wants to play".

Virat Kohli further added that, "Dhawan is going to be in a plaster for a couple of weeks. After that we will assess where he stands"

Shikhar Dhawan suffered an injury during his 109 ball 117 run knock as he was hit by a nasty bouncer from Australia's Pat Cummins in the second game of their World Cup campaign at The Oval on Sunday.

Also, when asked about whether the injury would affect Shikhar Dhawan's fielding, Team India's fielding coach R Sridhar said, "Throwing won't be a problem as it is not his dominant hand", What we would need to study carefully is "the impact while fielding and catching, as he is a slip fielder"

With Shikhar Dhawan injured, KL Rahul is all set to open the batting with Rohit Sharma for the upcoming games. It would be interesting to see as to who takes up the crucial number four slot.
