Despite suffering from an injury in the past, this Afghanistan wicket-keeper and batsman played the first two games in the tournament against Australia and Sri Lanka. However, he was ruled out of the tournament ahead of their clash against New Zealand due to a serious knee injury. The team has found themselves in the midst of a controversy since this Afghani batsman claimed that he was wrongly declared unfit for the tournament.

He said that he still doesn’t know why he was declared unfit for the tournament when he was fit enough to play. He also mentioned that some people in the board have planned to conspire against him and only the manager, doctor & captain were aware of the fact that he was going to be replaced. Even the coach found out later. Shahzad stated that this incident is extremely heartbreaking and the players along with him were in shock when they heard this news.

He also added that he don’t know what is the problem. They should let him know the problem if they have one. He also mentioned that he will quit cricket if they don’t want him to play.

When asked about Shahzad’s comment, ACB CEO, Asadullah Khan said that he is upset that he is not a part of the World Cup, but the team couldn’t have compromised on his fitness. He also stated that a proper medical report was sent to ICC before announcing his replacement.

Ikram Ali Khil is his replacement in the team who has played only three ODIs prior to the World Cup. Afghanistan has lost all their 3 matches played in the tournament. They will play against the Proteas on Saturday, June 15, at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
