Team India, after two successive wins in their World Cup 2019 campaign, were dealt a huge blow when Shikhar Dhawan - centurion in the game against Australia - was ruled out of the event for at least three weeks due to a fracture in the thumb. In his absence, BCCI confirmed that KL Rahul will open the innings against New Zealand on Thursday.

The player, who was picked as a back-up keeper, cemented his spot at number 4 after a hundred in the warm-up game ahead of the World Cup. He will have immense responsibilities, though, as Dhawan was one of the best players in ICC events, averaging more than 65.

Rahul will find it tough against Trent Boult against the Black Caps in overcast conditions, however. The bowler, who sent the Indian order packing in the warm-up match, can swing the ball both ways, which has often been India's nemesis. Boult has a great record against India, and is held in high reverence in the format.

Under overcast skies, the new ball will definitely swing, and Boult can get the ball to deviate both into and away from Rahul. He will look to target outside the off stump as Rahul is tentative in that channel. However, if he can survive the opening spell, it is likely that the Indian will get a big knock.
