MS Dhoni was criticised by the fans and experts for his slow run rate in the beginning of his innings in the ICC World Cup 2019. However, India had a positive tournament so far and the team lost only one match in the league stage, finishing at the top of the points table to enter the semi-finals. But the team’s middle order has been a rising concern for the Men in Blue with only the opener, Rohit Sharma and skipper, Virat Kohli scoring runs consistently for the team.

While speaking to The Times of India, Kapil Dev defended MS Dhoni and said that it is really unfair to criticise him. “It has happened to those who have been rated as all times great. They are not going to be 20 all over again,” Kapil Dev added. He also said that Dhoni is doing well as far as the team is concerned.

However, the 1983 World Cup winning captain admitted that MS Dhoni may not be meeting the expectations of the public. “The biggest problem is that we expect so much from our heroes,” Kapil added. He said that he is doing a fabulous job for the team and is an integral member of the think-tank. He further said that with someone as aggressive like Virat Kohli in the team as the captain, it is ideal to have someone with a calming effect like him. Kapil Dev believes that MS Dhoni’s wicket-keeping is good and also admitted that he cannot be as good as when he was 20 or 23.
