Virat Kohli and his side's World Cup dreams got over as New Zealand edged India in a memorable encounter by 18 runs at Old Trafford, Manchester. They will now face either England or Australia at the Mecca of Cricket on Sunday.

Playing on the reserve day and chasing 240 for a place in the finals, India got off to the worst start possible as they were reduced to 5 for 3 with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul back in the hut. Later, with the scorecard reading 92 for 6, Ravindra Jadeja and MS Dhoni staged one of the most remarkable comebacks ever in the history of World Cup cricket to take India within touching distance of securing a spot in the final. A mistimed shot from Jadeja in the 48th over meant that there was too much burden on MS Dhoni to finsh things off. He made a valiant 77 off 59 while MS Dhoni made 50. In the next over, a great throw from Martin Guptill sent MS Dhoni packing with 24 required off 9 balls. Eventually, the tail-enders went through the motions and handed the Kiwis a place in the finals. For New Zealand, Matt Henry picked up three crucial wickets of KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Dinesh Karthik to put India on the back foot early on in the innings. Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner also chipped in with two wickets apiece.
