25 years back, exactly on this day, Abbas-Mustan's thrilling drama Baazigar starring Shah Rukh Khan, Shilpa Shetty and Kajol had released at the Box Office. The thriller had released on 12th November 1993, and it managed to receive rave response from the critics and audience. Also, the film marked Shilpa Shetty's Bollywood debut. But little does anyone know that not Shilpa Shetty or Kajol but late legendary actress Sridevi was roped in to play a double role in the film. Yes, you read that right and for some reasons, things did not work out.

In an interview to Hindustan Times, Shilpa Shetty revealed that Sridevi was supposed to play a double role in the film. But that did not work out, and two leading ladies were roped in later. “Sridevi ji was supposed to play a double role in the film. But that did not work out, and two leading ladies were roped in later — me and Kajol. Shah Rukh Khan, too, wasn’t a huge superstar then, Kajol’s debut film Bekhudi (1992), too, hadn’t worked, and I was a newcomer, so it was a gamble of sorts. But once the film released, the three of us became stars. Even before Baazigar had released, Ratan Jain, the producer of the film, signed me for a three-film deal. First was Baazigar, second was Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994) and the third was Dhadkan (2000) — all three turned out to be the biggest hits of my career,” Shilpa Shetty revealed as she talked about being a part of the industry for 25 years now.

During the same interview, Shilpa Shetty also revealed that Baazigar was not supposed to be her debut film. She added, “I was supposed to make my debut with another film but as things work in the industry, that didn’t happen. Abbas and Mustan sir (film-makers) didn’t even ask me to give a screen test and roped me in after seeing my pictures. At 17, if you asked me if I knew what I was getting into, I would say I had no idea my life would turn out to be like this. I just wanted to do one film and see how things worked out for me. But as luck would have it, Baazigar turned out to be a platinum jubilee hit."

Baazigar was inspired from the Hollywood movie ‘A Kiss Before Dying’. The film still remains one of the favourites among Shah Rukh Khan fans. The music of the film was composed by Anu Malik. As the film turns 25 today, we feel nostalgic and are grateful to Abbas-Mustan for giving us this classic movie.

Even Sri maam rejected darr too...
her interview in a magazine "After Chandni and Lamhe, I feel Darr would have been an ordinary character for me. If I’m playing Shah Rukh Khan’s role, then of course, I would have loved to do it. The character Juhi played was new for her and so it was good for her. But for me, it was something I had done many times before."

That becoz of Stardom of Shridevi maam

Sridevi was to play a double role in the film but later the directors Abbas-Mustan felt a little apprehensive of having Sridevi on board, thinking that the viewers may not be able to sympathise with Shah Rukh's character if he kills her in the film. So the role was written again and two fresh faces, Shilpa Shetty and Kajol were taken in the film.

Aww....just reminds me how old I am

No one is like my siridevi :) :)

Wow! And she never spoke about the movies she rejected! And people like Jr B and his wife are releasing articles daily about the movies they rejected as they have nothing else to talk about!

The incomparable Sridevi.

Thanks to Sridevi for rejecting such roles. Thanks to her other actresses had the opportunity to show their talents to the world. Actresses like Kajol, Shilpa and more should forever be grateful to her.

That been said, Baazigar wouldn't have been what it is if she had been in the film as planned. It was best it was given to fresh talents who had to prove themselves. And they did.

Even she rejected many superhit movies (no scope of females) till bahubali. she was great actress. miss her badly nowadays

Such grace she had that she never spoke abt the movies she rejected. Unlike Ash .....

Darr, Baazigar, Mohra, Beta- some of the super hit movies that Sridevi rejected. She was also having a tough time in personal life at that time..

If she had done these movies, there would be no question of downfall in her career.

They may have wanted Sridevi to bring the masses to the cinema . SRK was yet to make his mark ,both ladies were unknown too . Had she done Baazigar they'd have pushed her role above the villainous SRK ,perhaps detracting from the story itself. Incidentally Sri refused Darr too .

I just love SRI for asking SRK’s character in darr. sri was at the top of her game and wanted a intense negative role. Anyways that couldn’t happen. At least she tried. Today’s top actresses don’t even try to give themselves a new look.

Aww I miss her

At least proof read your article

Movie would have been terrible with a double role, but that was the fashion back then, just make all major characters look identical so big stars get double the screen time.

loved Kajol in this awesome film !

No wonder, sridevi was first choice of almost every blockbuster in 90’s.
