Irrfan on Sonu Nigam controversy: When there is a noisy discotheque near a hospital, do we talk about it then?

Irrfan speaks about the Sonu Nigam controversy. "The loudspeaker matter is a big one. We will have to first think that are we, as a society, really so sensitive when it comes to sound? Are we sensitive about sound in other places? " he said.

Sonu Nigam had hit headlines after the singer took to Twitter to vent out his frustration over the use of loudspeakers for morning azaan which apparently disturbed his sleep. His statement was not well taken by many who bashed the singer left and right. Sonu, however, stood on his grounds and even shaved his head after a Maulavi announced a fatwa against him.

While many stars came out in support for Sonu saying that his comment should be seen in a larger context of use of loudspeakers in general, a few thought his comments were rather harsh.

Now the next to voice his opinion on this controversy is Irrfan. The actor was asked to comment on the controversy in a media interaction held for the promotions of his upcoming movie Hindi Medium. Commenting on it, Irrfan said, "The loudspeaker matter is a big one. We will have to first think that are we, as a society, really so sensitive when it comes to sound? Are we sensitive about sound in other places? When there is a noisy discotheque near a hospital, do we talk about it then? If somebody has a problem with something then we should tackle all other problems related to the whole matter.”

Further, he added, "In other countries, there are certain restrictions when it comes to car horns, this is because people are very sensitive to sound or noise of any kind. First of all, we will have to figure out what is the actual factor that is causing a certain person so much stress related to the sound of a loudspeaker. And, then also figure out if they have a problem with loudspeakers used for azaan or elsewhere too.”

On the work front, Irrfan is currently busy promoting Hindi Medium which is directed by Saket Chaudhary. The movie revolves around the problems faced by parents when trying to get their children admitted in an English Medium school. The movie also features Pakistani actor Saba Qamar and is slated to release on May 19, 2017.

True colours of a madarssa chap

I feel sorry for the muslims of india, 25 crore people are being opressed where the hell is international media to cover this story of the biggest democratic country so called.

Why is everything looked at as a suppression of minorites.....Sonu Nigam raised an important issue. My family personally do not like late night loud bhajans or early morning sounds from masjid. Both are inconvenient to people. By the way, there is a law that prevents loud noises near Hospitals. Go learn something Irrfan!

1st of all i have never seen a discotheque (Which are soundproof obviously) near a hospital that is so illogical. May be there are some and if they are, we should definitely address and eradicate the problem of noise wherever it is needed but that doesn't make SONU's statement at wrong. No one spoke about loudspeaker (be it in Temple/Mosque/Gurdwara/Church) and the inconvenience faced by society before this. But it's never too late to start a change.

BTW discotheque se awaaz bahar aane lagi to janta bahar hi free me nachane nahi lagegi LOL..

Indians are showing their true colors after bjp nd modi.. When irfan talked about secularism nd talked against islam everyone was in his favo nd now against. Thank god quaid e azam gave us Pakistan.

Many more thanks to your quaid e azam from us Indians too. Can't describe in words how greatful we are to that great gentleman.

You don't find discos next to hospitals and they have rules about ensuring its noise free. Honestly all the sonu nigam tweet showed was how people have become permanently offended. Loudspeakers should be banned, there's no reason for people to broadcast their relegion (or anything for that matter) at 5 in the morning everyday. For festivals, sure thats valid but every dingle day is ridulous

Ridiculous of Irrfan to compare disco music to loud speaker pollution of Azaan, bhajans or songs at all hours of the day and especially early morning and late night. It is inconsiderate towards the general public just to serve the desires of a particular community or religion. Sonu Nigam was absolutely right to bring this to open discussion. It is very courageous of him and I would have expected Irrfan to support this cause rather than give this disco comparison and deflect the issue. He is politically and or religiously motivated rather than care about humanity around him who is suffering this noise outrage. We have banned noisy crackers and loud music after certain hours in many places/cities why is Azaan or Bhajan an exception?

His movie gonna flop so bad, coming after Bahubali and with a paki actress...whatever!!

His movie gonna flop so bad, coming after Bahubali and with a paki actress...whatever!!

Nawaz Manoj Bajpai are true talents unlike this Hollywood hungry Irfan who seems to on a statement shooting statement to publicise for his movie - first Vinod Khanna comment and now loudspeaker

Please tell me which discotheque plays loud music five times a day, music that sounds like noise - as per Irfan

Please note that he compared Discotheque to a Mosque and Azaan to the music playing in a Discotheque...specially the ones screaming intolerance!! PV plz post

Irrfan is free to complain if any discotheque is creating trouble close to a hospital. He has no right to say that his religion prayers should disturb normal people five times a day. There were no loud speakers when Prophet Mohd. started Islam in 700 AD. Muslims need to calm down and stop defending themselves. Irrespective of religion, no one should play loud music or prayers in public.

good one..

Did not expect this kind of cheapness from Irfan. Sonu talked about all religions not just azaan.

Irfan Khan gave a great answer. India shows its true colours of religious intolerance all the time Sonu Nigam's deliberate targeting of just the azaan was another example of it.

All discos are mostly sound proof they don't have loudspeaker on them to disturb people at 5 In the morning and 5 times a day and you wnt find any disc neat hospitals wht Sonu said was against the disturbance it causes talk some sense irfan
