Anubhav Sinha’s directorial Article 15 released today, and social media has been flooding with reviews. The Ayushmann Khurrana starrer is inspired by true life events, such as the 2014 Badaun gang rape, and is based on Article 15 of the Indian Constitution, which prohibits discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth.

Article 15 is not the first Bollywood film which has dared to take on social issues. Here are the top 3 Hindi films which impressed the audience, along with leaving a deep impact:

1. Pink:

The social thriller starring Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari, Andrea Tariang and Angad Bedi was one of the best films of the year 2016. The story revolves around a girl who was molested and tried to file a complaint. However, things get tough for the victim, because the accused is a politician's nephew. Retired lawyer Deepak, played by Big B, helps the girl win the case along with spreading a simple yet important message, ‘NO means NO. And when someone says so, you stop.’

2. Rang De Basanti:

One of the best films made in the history of Hindi cinema, Rang De Basanti stars an ensemble cast including Aamir Khan, Siddharth Narayan, Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Kapoor, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Atul Kulkarni and Alice Patten. The story follows the journey of 5 young men who are largely apolitical. However, a sense of patriotism awakens in them when their friend, a flight lieutenant in the Indian Air Force, dies due to government corruption.

3. Swades:

Although Shah Rukh Khan is the King of Bollywood and every film of his is amazing, his character Mohan Bhargava in Swades is one of his finest performances till date. The film revolves around an NRI who comes back to India, driven by nostalgia but finds himself on a quest to find where he truly belongs. The film was an inspiration to many and explained how the fortunate and educated ones can help out the underprivileged parts of the society.
