The coming of age film Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan clocked one year since its release today. Ayushmann Khurrana, being the ‘woke’ role model he is, has worked in several socially conscious movies in the past. The actor has become a household name for addressing real-life issues in almost all his projects. With SMZS, the star drew attention to the struggles of LGBTQIA+ community in India by being a part of a light-hearted romantic drama. Sensitizing people about the basic human rights concerns faced by the community, Ayushmann was applauded for making a bold statement in the most open-minded way.

Talking about the eye-opener on its first anniversary, Ayushmann discussed how taboo topics need to be addressed in Indian cinema as it helps in changing the mindset of people at large. He added how in order to bring constructive changes in society, it takes a lot of time and effort. The actor also revealed he was told by the industry to not do the film and was suggested the film was ‘very tricky’, further adding ‘no one would accept this kind of cinema’. Emphasizing normalizing same-sex relations, the star noted how the film helped creating a more forward-thinking society, opening ground for discussion.

Ayushmann also shared he always wanted to reach out and have a conversation with people about the subjects that I have addressed through my movies. In the past, the star has worked on Dum Laga Ke Haisha, which was based on body-positivity, Bala which discussed social challenges of balding and Vicky Donor which normalized adoption. “Rest assured, I will continue doing that because it satiates me as an artist and motivates me to discover more subjects like these’ said Ayushmann.
