Radhika Apte has become a household name, all courtesy her back-to-back movies and web series. Be it PadMan or Sacred Games, viewers have been appreciating her acts calling her one of the most versatile female actors that Bollywood has. In an interview with Hindustan Times, she opened up on how when she started her career in 2010, she was hemmed in by stereotypes like that of not letting her play North Indian characters.

“Initially, when I started, I had a few issues. Like [people] constantly used to tell me that you can’t play a North Indian, because you are a Maharashtrian. And now, a North Indian is playing Laxmibai,” Radhika told the leading daily. She took a subtle dig at Kangana Ranaut as she will be playing the role of Rani Laxmibai in Manikarnika. “So, why is it the other way around that you have a problem with?” added Radhika.

Elaborating her stance on the same, she added, “We’ve had North Indian characters play South Indian characters. But that’s good. That’s how it should be. Actors shouldn’t be restricted on the basis of where they come from, and [be] cast on that basis. Of course, there’s a lot of hard work that goes into preparing for such characters. For example, if I’m playing a Punjabi character, wouldn’t I work for two months to learn the language, and other little details of [being] a Punjabi?”

Well, these 8 years in the industry has taught Radhika to be stoic and not to complain. On this, she said, “Sometimes, it makes sense that directors want to cast someone who’s from that region. They might bring more to the table, because they belong to a specific area. So, you shouldn’t take things personally. A lot of times it happens that, when you don’t get a role, you say, ‘Why did I not get that role?’ Because that role was written for someone else, and you shouldn’t take such things personally. I’ve done a lot of roles for which I wasn’t the first choice — it went to someone else first — and I’ve got a lot of success like that.”

This radhika is getting too big for her shoes. Give her some humble pie to eat

Radhika is not getting snappy with anyone , where did u folks get that anyway ?

Bipasha basic played a lot of non Bengali roles

How is stating the information obvious taking a dig. But she should have done her research before opening her mouth. Though Laxmibai was a Maratha she is from Jhansi area which is considered the north and a lot of language and mannerisms will be of that area.

NOBODY can play Manikarnika better than Kangana.

Whatever! So foolish to assume she's taking a dig.

The weirdest thing was PC playing a North-eastern in Mary-Kom.

Learn to take rejection positevely. Nothing is stone set in entertainment industry. Its all about the screen presence and chemistry. Sometimes a role is written with an specific actress in mind. Rejection is part of being an actress.

Love her

It was not a dig, just her own experience and observation. I adore them both. Stop writing such articles!

I think many actresses from south have played north indians, Hema malini, Rekha, Sirdevi, Vidya Balan, Deepika etc.

And Aishwarya, Vyjayanthimala, Waheeda Rehman, and the list goes on and on.

Bollywooders are still stuck in the regions they left behind in Pakistan. Punjabis are less than 1.5% of India ( 2crores) but they are 65% of Pakistan (11 crores). PV plz post hard hitting facts.

Punjabis were always part of India, They have not arrived from anywhere else. Moreover there are more than 2 crore punjabis. You have missed to consider punjabis from Haryana,Delhi,Himachal,j and K and Mumbai

Nobody mentioned in this whole article is Punjabi.Kangana is from Himachal, shes a rajput. And Radhika is marathi.

Never knew even ths things are issues in Bollywood. Is it really true. I doubt..

I do not think she is taking a dig but I agree that Radhika is not a good actress, sorry she is totally overrated, I watched SG and she is really poor, boring character, no clue of acting, thats all I can say.

Media is the biggest culprit is causing controversies and major issues!

She was direct and didn't take any "subtle digs"! Don't make it an issue!

She's absolutely right. Exposing Bollywood's stupidity and hypocrisy.

Well maybe Kangana can play any role because she's established star now. When she was a newbie, she was rejected too for some reasons.

SHE IS NOT TAKING A DIG SHE IS MAKING A POINT THAT GOOD ACTORS CAN PLAY A ROLE AND BE CONVINCING AT IT AND ONE SHOULD NOT SAY U CANT DO IT JUST BECAUSE OF YOUR BACKGROUND. NEXT ANGELINA JOLIE IS PLAYING A BLACK WOMAN

Oky after reading multiple times, can't understand how its a Dig??? Radikha has all rights to express her view AND all i can say, LOOK example: Kangana's biggest film Tannu weds Mannu Returns, Where she played haryanvi athlete & won National award BUT she is not from haryana. LOL need i say more what [Poor Radhika]

So what? Didn't Deepika played a Gujarati in Ramleela or Mastani?pretty sure likes of Kajol ..Rani..Bipasha etc has played roles other than Bengali

That’s not a dig.

Sya it like you mean it! Go radhika!

She has become too good for her shoes. The other day she was taking a dig on Sushant too saying that he is an over rated actor.

Many of the public's comments said her performance in Sacred Games was the most overrated and weakest link out if the whole cast!!!
