Kalank is one of the most-awaited films of 2019. Directed by Abhishek Varman, the film stars Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Aditya Roy Kapur and Sonakshi Sinha. Everyone knew the star cast of Kalank, but on the day of trailer launch, everyone got to know that Kunal Kemmu also plays an important role in the film. The makers purposely kept it a secret to add excitement to the film. In the trailer, we saw how outrageous Kunal's character Abdul is. In an EXCLUSIVE chat with Pinkvilla, the actor opened up about working in Abhishek's period drama and why his role was kept a secret.

When we asked the reason why he chose to do Kalank which is totally different from the films he has been a part of earlier, the Dhol actor said, "Firstly, it is such an interesting film in itself. Karan Johar was going to make it 15 years ago and all of us knew about it and Abhishek Varman was writing it. It was such an amazing ensemble cast. Most importantly, when I heard the part they wanted me to play, I was very surprised because generally, I've been doing comedy and drama, and this is a 180-degree change of a character I am doing. It was very interesting for me to jump into a character like this which people said they didn't expect me to do."

In the trailer, we saw how Abdul threatens Zafar which is Varun's character. We asked Kunal if he will be seen as a villain, to which he told us, "He has got a lot of shades. It is not a negative character. You will see it and all the positive or negative questions will be answered in the film. Every character in the film has multiple shades and that's why an interesting part of the film. I am very excited to see how people receive the film and my character".

When questioned what was the reason his character and presence in the film was kept a secret? Kunal told us, "I don't know what the right answer is as I didn't get involved in the marketing strategies of the film at all. It was a conscious decision of doing what they did with the film and they know the best. I am very happy as and when it came out, I am very happy with the reaction it has received."

The actor was all praises for his co-star Varun Dhawan. Kunal told us about his experience of working with Varun. "He is great. I have loved his acting for a very long time. I've met him socially even before he started acting. He is one of the most hardworking actors. I've seen the hard work he puts into a character; how involved he is; he likes to talk about it and take suggestions. He is really an entertaining person to be around. I really enjoyed my time on-screen, off-screen and on the sets with him. I am really fond of him," Kunal told Pinkvilla.

This movie looks like a wannabee Pakeezah .

I was going to put a very bitchy comment, but then I remembered Kunal Khemu is a bloody good actor. It's just sad he has not been getting the kind of work he should be doing. None of his work barring Kalyug and a few others has been great, not because of him, but the movies he has been offered are awful. This is the same guy who has been in landmark movies (well I think they are)as a child star and one of the best out of them all. Hum Hai Rahi Pyaar Ke, Raja Hindustani and I believe his last movie as a child actor Zakham was one of his best performances. Come on Kunal show the world you still have it in you!
