The nation woke up to the sad news that veteran actor, writer, playwright, director and Jnanpith awardee Girish Karnad passed away in Bengaluru today. The actor, who was 81, was suffering from prolonged illness. His demise has saddened the entire film industry and many celebs are taking to their social media handles to offer their condolences. Apart from celebs and socialites, several politicians including PM Narendra Modi and President of India, Ram Nath Kovind are also mourning thespian's death

PM Narendra Modi took to his Twitter handle and wrote that Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting. He tweeted, "Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile acting across all mediums. He also spoke passionately on causes dear to him. His works will continue being popular in the years to come. Saddened by his demise. May his soul rest in peace."

President of India, Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, "Sad to hear of the passing of Girish Karnad, writer, actor and doyen of Indian theatre. Our cultural world is poorer today. My condolences to his family and to the many who followed his work #PresidentKovind." Check out the tweets right below. Apart from them, Arvind Kejriwal, Shashi Tharoor, Dr. G Parameshwara and B.S. Speaking of the late actor, he featured in many South Indian and Bollywood films and in plays too. Apart from Jnanpith award, he was also bestowed with  Padma Shri in the year 1974 and later Padma Bhushan in 1992 for his contribution in arts.
