A man ahead of his own time, Guru Dutt began his journey in the film industry with a three-year contract with the Prabhat Film Company in Pune. He made his acting debut with a small role in the 1944 film Chand. His first film as a director was Baazi, starring Dev Anand, which became an immediate success. He went on to dedicate his life to the film industry and became a legend.

1. Pyaasa:

Set in Calcutta, the film stars Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman and Mala Sinha in lead roles. It follows the journey of a struggling poet named Vijay, played by Dutt, whose work is not taken seriously by publishers. He encounters a good-hearted prostitute named Gulabo, played by Waheeda Rehman, who helps get his poems published.

2. Kaagaz Ke Phool:

The first Indian film in CinemaScope and Guru Dutt's final film as a director, Kaagaz Ke Phool was ranked at #160 among the greatest films of all time. The film tells the story of a director whose marriage is on the rocks because his wife's family disapproves of his career. He goes on to fall in love with another woman and transforms her into a famous star. The film is considered to be much ahead of its time and is a must watch.

3. Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam:

Based on the Bengali novel, Saheb Bibi Golam by Bimal Mitra, the film stars Guru Dutt, Meena Kumari, Rehman, Waheeda Rehman and Nazir Hussain. It follows the platonic friendship between a beautiful lonely wife (Bibi) of an aristocrat (Sahib) and a career-driven low-income part-time servant (Ghulam).

4. Chaudhvin Ka Chand:

A box-office hit and one of the top-grossing films of 1960, Chaudhvin Ka Chand centres on a love triangle between Guru Dutt, Rehman and Waheeda Rehman. Set in Lucknow, it tells us the story of 3 best friends. Two out of the three have fallen in love with the same woman, named Jameela.

5. Mr. & Mrs. '55:

One of the best romantic comedies of the year 1955, Mr. & Mrs. '55 revolves around a struggling cartoonist Preetam, played by Dutt, who meets a wealthy and westernised heiress Anita, played by Madhubala, at a tennis match. After crossing many hurdles, the two finally fall in love.
