As Sanjay Leela Bhansali grows a year older, we pay ode to the legendary director who revolutionized Bollywood films, giving them a new meaning. Bhansali’s films always stand out from the crowd for their amazing cinematography, intriguing plots, fascinating set design, and exquisite direction. The director who started his career with hit after hit, never really had what some may call a ‘slow start’. Bhansali knew exactly what he wanted to show the audience and how he was going to achieve the final result.

Here are 5 extraordinary masterpieces directed by the iconic filmmaker:

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam

When this film went on to win 9 Filmfare trophies, the film industry knew what they were in for. As Bhansali’s second directorial venture, the film drew everyone’s attention as it swept the awards season. Starring Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan, and Ajay Devgn, the film was showered with critical acclaim. The booming commercial success stole people’s hearts and is still considered to be one of the director’s best works to date.

Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji’s magical work in the film portrayed the true meaning of resiliency. As a directorial genius, Bhansali was able to perfectly challenge the art of depicting emotions. The movie that drew love from every corner of the country went on to win a record-breaking 11 Filmfare awards. The drama portrayed the ‘fighting spirit’ in a way no movie ever has, showing viewers in order to overcome obstacles, one has to believe in the strength of willpower. The critic’s favorite redefined the fate of Bollywood forever.

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet inspired film Ram-Leela, was beautifully crafted and was simply one of his best visually-pleasing dramas. The tear-jerker showcased a perfect mix of passionate love and intense enmity. Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s on-screen performance shook everyone to the core. The duo’s chemistry was wonderfully presented, so much so that the pair went on to become an audience favourite.

Bajirao Mastani

Speaking of Bhansali’s films that captivated audiences in seconds with ravishing set designs and spell-bounding war sequences, this movie takes the number one spot. The love triangle presented between Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh, connected well with the film’s viewers. The masterpiece went on to become the highest-grossing film of the year and also bagged 9 Filmfare awards.

Although the film made controversial headlines, it also was widely liked by the critics. Based on Malik Muhammad Jayasi's poem of the same name, Padmaavat tells us the tale of Sultan Alauddin Khalji's desire to capture the beautiful Queen Padmavati and her husband Ratan Singh's fight against Khalji to stop him. The iconic movie had Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor in pivotal roles. The film, like Bhansali’s other works, is a hard one to skip.
