Kalki Koechlin on why women in Bollywood don't talk about sexual harassment: It's their career on the line

"No one listens to you when you’re a nobody. If you’re a celebrity and you talk about it, it only becomes a shocking headline," says Bollywood actress and gender activist Kalki Koechlin in a news segment with a UK-based news channel.

With the recent Harvey Weinstein sexual harassment scandal as well as the Me Too campaign going rampant in the West, one wonders why women in Bollywood don't speak up against sexual harassment that they face through in the industry.

When Kalki was asked about the same by the news channel, the actress stated, "It is a very difficult step to take. Because it's their career on the line. You are dealing with hundreds of people throwing their opinions at you. It can really shake a person emotionally."

"I know several girls who are newcomers in Bollywood – struggling, going for auditions, who are constantly being discriminated because of the way they look. People say you are too fat or comments being made or being hit on. Having phone calls at two in the morning from your casting director. Things that no one is reporting and nobody is researching because there is no famous person to headline it. Men have been pretty clueless about the fact that almost every woman had been harassed in some way or the other. We are just so numb to it. If you get touched in a bus, we don't even think anymore about it."

"I think it's important that you have a support group. It can be online, a therapist, family or friends. Both men and women need to be having a dialogue with each other, not against each other. That's really important," Kalki added.

Yes...its their career because they would have used this men/women (whoever harassed them) as a ladder to get the heights in their careers. Its one thing to hashtag #metoo when a billion others do, but its an other thing to say no when they no they would benefit from just keeping quiet.

So true. Look at these nepo kids, just because they grew up with each other, they think they know what the other is capable of in private life. The way sonam stood up for HR or industry does for ranbir despite knowing his philandering ways, I won't be surprised if a string of women came forward tomorrow and nobody believed them. Sawara, Richa and Ranveer have mentioned their experiences of sexual harassments without taking names.

The average girl in India is not protected from rape. Is it the one who speaks up against the powerful people of Bollywood that would survive?

Ok

I agree with her, no woman in bollywood will go against big names because she knows that she'll not find support even among her female colleagues who can just blah blah about feminism but in real life they'll support big name isntead who can give them good roles

Why isn't she talking about it?

Women should learn to leave with it.
