India is all set to celebrate it’s 72nd Republic Day on January 26, 2021 and the preparations for the same are going on full swing. It is a proud occasion for every Indian across the world and it is celebrated by a lot of zeal every year. Although the COVID 19 pandemic has dampened the celebrations for a year now, the pride in our hearts remain intact and it is evident with the preparations around. For the uninitiated, January 26 marks the day Constitution of India was adopted in 1950 after attaining independence on August 15, 1947.

Not just the commoners, but our industrywalas are also quite enthusiastic about Republic Day. In fact, every year several movies are also seen taking over the ticket windows in order to cash on the holiday. However, the situation is quite different this year as no Bollywood movie is releasing on the occasion of Republic Day given the COVID 19 pandemic in India as the industry witnessed its first shutdown which lasted for months. As the box office is getting back in action now, here’s a look at how big releases, which were released on Republic Day, had performed at the ticket windows.

Race 2

Starring Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, John Abraham, Jacqueline Fernandez, Anil Kapoor and Ameesha Patel, Race 2 had released in 2013 and witnessed a stupendous response from the audience and made a lifetime collection of Rs 93.4 crore. To note, Race 2, which was helmed by Abbas Mustan, was the sequel of 2008 release action thriller.

Kaabil

Helmed by Sanjay Gupta, the action thriller had released in 2017 and featured Hrithik Roshan, Yami Gautam, Ronit Roy and Rohit Roy in the lead. The movie narrated the   story of a blind man who is on a revenge spree killing people who are responsible for his wife’s death. Kaabil leaves everyone intrigued as it is not easy to believe that a blind man can kill someone. The movie had earned Rs 86.5 cr.

Raees

Shah Rukh Khan’s 2017 release was one of the most talked about movies of the year wherein King Khan was seen playing the titular role. Helmed by Rahul Dholakia, the period action thriller had a great ensemble of cast which included Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. While Raees witnessed a box office clash with Hrithik Roshan’s Kaabil, the SRK starrer went on to become one of the highest grossing movies of 2017 and made a lifetime collection of Rs 128.7 cr.

Padmaavat

Sanjay Leela Bhansali directorial Padmaavat has been one of the most talked about movies of 2018 as it narrated the story of Rani Padmavat, Maharawal Ratan Singh and Alauddin Khilji. Featuring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, the period drama had opened to rave views from the audience and made a collection of Rs 282.2 cr.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

Starring Kangana Ranaut in the titular role, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, which was released in 2019, narrated the story of Rani Laxmi Bai and here batter against the Britishers. The movie as directed by Radha Krishna Jagarlamudi and Kangana Ranaut and it received a decent response from audience and critics. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi made a lifetime collection of Rs 90.8 cr.

Thackeray

Helmed by Abhijit Panse, Thackeray witnessed Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the role of Shiv Sena’s Bal Thackeray. The movie was based on the life Shiv Sena founder and witnessed a box office clash with Kangana Ranaut’s Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi. Thackeray made a lifetime collection of Rs 19.8 cr.
