Karan Johar criticizes his film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai; says Shah Rukh Khan's character had no spine
Karan Johar criticizes his own film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and states that Shah Rukh Khan's character Rahul had no spine.
Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee in key roles, Kuch Kuch Hota has been one of the biggest hits helmed by Karan Johar. The film cult classic released in 1998 and went on to become an iconic romance drama remembered till date. However, on asking director Karan Johar about his blockbuster hit, the helmer has a set of harsh reviews for his own film. Speaking to Mid Day, Karan Johar recently took an axe to the film and stated that the script lacked sense.
Karan spoke about the ethics and gender politics gone wrong in his film and stated that Shah Rukh Khan's character Rahul, which is still subject to a lot of fandom and buzz is actually flawed and lacks a spine. Rahul as a character is deeply confused, he said. Whatever happened to him was a result of the consequences of the actions of other characters- his dead wife Tina, his eight-year-old daughter and his long lost best friend Anjali. Karan also said that it was Shah Rukh’s charm and persona that added value to the character without which it was nothing.
He also went on to say that there was no backstory or logic to the characters in the film. No one knows what they did for a living. Even the eight letters that Rani's character Tina wrote for her daughter for each birthday made no sense either. As for fixes, he said that if he were making the film today, he would keep it more real and human, adding confrontation that the original script lacked.
He also spoke about a deleted scene that he had written where Anjali bashes Rahul saying that he fails to take a stand for himself. The director said that he would keep the scene as a part of the film if it was being made at present.
Karan Johar's last release Kalank did not fair very well at the ticket counter though his upcoming films promise a good collection. He is all set for his upcoming projects Dostana 2 and Takht hitting the screens next year in 2020.
