Karan Johar on Takht being compared to Sanjay Leela Bhansali movies: I hope I can find my own voice

During an interaction with an entertainment portal, Karan Johar spoke at length about his upcoming directorial Takht. He opened up about the film being compared to Sanjay Leela Bhansali's movies.

Karan Johar left everyone surprised by announcing his next film as the director. Titled Takht, the film has a stellar star cast comprising of Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Bhumi Pedneker, Janhvi Kapoor and Anil Kapoor. Takht is set in the Mughal era and will have Ranveer and Vicky playing brothers and Kareena will be seen as their sister. The film will go on floors soon and will hit the screens in the year 2020.

During an interaction with Film Companion, when KJo was asked about the ensemble cast, he stated, "It’s an unusual mix of talent. They are actors who have walked the parallel path, we have the superstar dynamic with Kareena (Kapoor), there’s Anil Kapoor who I have never directed before – but each actor fits the part to the tee. It’s not that I have gone to them because I have access. It’s a strange dichotomy. Each one has never played a part like this and yet each one fits it perfectly."

We have seen a lot of period dramas in Bollywood and lately, Sanjay Leela Bhansali gave us two of them - Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat. On being asked about Takht being compared to SLB movies, Karan replied, "I would be lying if I didn’t admit that the comparison is very challenging. I love Sanjay’s aesthetic. The comparison scares me but I hope I can find my own voice. I hope I’m not doomed by comparison. I’m just recovering from Sairat and I can’t go there again. I also don’t want to be overwhelmed by it."

He concluded by saying, "He has set the bar high and if I pay homage to his work, I will be proud of it. So much of my cinema pays homage to Yash Chopra but I still gave it my own vision and my own palette. More than the comparison, I’m afraid of not living up to the potential of the narrative. I just hope I can do justice to the material."

Kjo likes to theow around big words but not sure he knows what he’s talking about. This movie will do well enough but comparisons to slb are ridiculous, he’s in his own league

Everyone has been commenting about the cast of this movie and the problems it will pose etc when in fact the biggest problem is Karan himself. He is absolutely not capable of handling a period drama.

karan ek movie bana..&naam rakh nepotism ke bacche.

Vicky kaushal is the only reason that this film maybe worth watching!

Karan you are terrible director. How can you compare to Yash Chopra? He was classic love story teller. You don't have 10% of him.

With Alia around lets see if he gives Kareena a well written character with depth or just use her name like Ash in ADHM for publicity as we know how much Kareena reads her scripts. Hope it's not another "I like to be a part of a big film" type of role.

Karan should take a leaf out of Ashutosh Gowarikar 's book when he made Jodhaa Akbar . It's also a historical set in the Mughal era but the treatment's very unlike SLB's visually opulent dramas . Ashutosh's take was very original effectively making it one of the most admired historicals ever.

Padmavat was a tribute to Khilji rather than Rani Padmini. SLB surely missed the plot there. Takht will be mainly about jewelry, sets etc. Kareena if used rightly could be the highlight of the film. Otherwise, it's a big meh.

sirf slb hi nahin reh gaya historical movies banane keliye

Karan coped Adi and Yash Chopra to make it, now for ADHM he copied Imtiaz, and will copy SLB for this.

Also made SOTY to copy Hirani’s style of narration and making from 3 idiot. KJO has been a copy cat all along

I think takht has more content and is more intense than bansali’s movies, takht has to be about its characters, don’t know about alia and janhvi’s characters, but all the other characters are just amazing. Bansali should have done this kind of script than padmavat. I hope karan gets it right.

KJo! You will find your own voice. SLB movies are just loud and obnoxious. They are good, but you can't watch it more than once because they are just too loud. KJo will do justice. I am sure of it!

karan copies yasho chopra ! now he is going to copy sanjay leela. Lets see if it works !!! it may because of ranveer and vicky kaushal. Alia is just out of league here
