Sanjay Leela Bhansali's niece Sharmin Segal and Javed Jaffrey's son Meezaan, stepped into Bollywood this year with their debut film Malaal. The remake of Tamil hit 7G Rainbow Colony, Malaal revolves around Astha Tripathi and Shiva More's love story, who are from contrasting backgrounds and live in a Mumbai chawl. While the film has received mixed reviews, Sharmin and Meezaan have been applauded for their promising performances.

The film saw a poor opening day and went on to face a dull weekend. The Box Office report states: “Malaal had a very dull weekend of 1.75 crore nett apprx and the first day basically sealed its fate. There was some growth on Sunday but with Saturday not really going up the Sunday growth hardly mattered. The collections for the film are mainly from Mumbai circuit while in North there was no audience for this film.”

In a recent interview, Meezaan opened up about his character Shiva and shared, “He is an extremist and will do anything to get her (Aastha). The lives of the two characters in Malaal encounter drastic changes because of love. But somewhere they meet the middle ground as he starts becoming more like her, and starts adapting to her ideology, while she starts becoming more like him. And then they become one, which makes it very interesting.”
