Varun Dhawan's October can easily be touted as one of the best movies of 2018 so far. The Shoojit Sircar directorial also marked the debut of Banita Sandhu in the showbiz.
The movie held well over the weekdays and has grossed around Rs 27.75 crore in its first week. The film has recorded the lowest figures in its first week as per Varun's standard but again it is also Varun's first film inspired by European cinema which is dire and flat for the majority of Hindi film audience. Of course, Badlapur was there but then a thriller movie usually performs better than others.
If the movie is able to maintain its momentum in the second week, it will manage to cross Rs 40 crore mark which is a decent figure.
Meanwhile, a Marathi filmmaker Hemal Trivedi claimed that the film is plagiarised from 2017 Marathi film titled Aarti - The Unknown Love Story, directed by Sarika Mene.
As reported by a leading tabloid, Hemal Trivedi wrote on a Facebook post, "The filmmakers of October never acquired any rights to the Marathi film and they never contacted Sarika."
Sarika Mene told the tabloid, "I want the audience to watch both films and be impartial in their opinion. When I watched October, [I realised that] the emotions and characters portrayed are similar. Only a few things don't match."
The Marathi film is based on Sarika's brother Sunny Pawar's life and his girlfriend Aarti Makwana, who was paralysed in a car accident. It traces Sunny's journey who stands by her side till her last breath.
However, a source from October's production house said, "The movie comes from a personal space for Shoojit whose mother was in a comatose state in 2004 and he had taken care of her." Sircar confirmed that he had received a letter from the Screenwriters Association, notifying him of the complaint. He said, "We'll respond to it officially, post which we'll issue our official statement."
