Ashutosh Gowariker’s Panipat has been grabbing the headlines for several reasons lately. While the impressive posters and intriguing trailer have left the audience wanting for more, its grandeur has also made the heads turn. The movie will star Arjun Kapoor as Sadashiv Rao Bhau, Kriti Sanon as Parvati and Sanjay Dutt will be seen playing the role of Afghan emperor Ahmad Shah Abdali. While each character’s look has managed to receive a thumbs up from the audience, it is Sanjay Dutt’s look that has garnered maximum appreciation from the audience.

But according to a recent buzz, Dutt’s portrayal of Abdali is also catching the attention of Afghanistan. According to a report published in Bollywood Hungama, the Afghanistan embassy fears that the Ashutosh Gowariker directorial might misinterpret Abdali’s character. As a result, they have written to the Ministry of External Affairs and asked to meet Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar. In the letter, the officials also mentioned that the distorted depiction of Ahmad Shah Abdali might hurt the emotions of Afghans and in turn affect the harmony between India and Afghanistan.

“Since the film is related to former Afghan emperor Ahmad Shah Abdali, any insensitive/ distorted depiction of his character might provoke emotions of Afghans which could be unfairly exploited by others to adversely affect the trust and harmony that exists so well among the people of two countries,” part of the letter reportedly read.

On the other hand, Former Afghanistan ambassador to India Dr. Shaida Abdali also expressed his concern over Ahmad Shah Abdali’s portrayal in the movie and reached out to Sanjay Dutt for the same on micro-blogging site Twitter. He wrote, “Dear @duttsanjay Ji: Historically, the Indian cinema has been extremely instrumental in strengthening the Indo-Afghan ties - I very much hope that the film "Panipat" has kept that fact in mind while dealing with this important episode of our shared history.”

To note, Panipat is based on the Third Battle of Panipat which was fought between Marathas and Ahmad Shah Abdali in 1761. While Abdali had won the battle, he had slaughtered thousands of Maratha prisoners later. Panipat is slated to hit the screens on December 6 this year.
