Amid the Coronavirus lockdown, several frontline heroes are fighting the deadly virus and that includes medical staff and police officers who are doing their duty to keep us safe, much like Sehmat aka Alia Bhatt in 2018’s film Raazi. Raazi showcased the sacrifice of a Kashmiri girl who agreed to spy on the Pakistan army and help India amid the tensions between the countries. It is because of her that India manages to win over Pakistan in the 1971 war.

Hence, to honour the unsung heroes, a film like Raazi must be on your binge-watch list amid the lockdown. Well, not just for patriotic reasons but also due to the stellar performances by actors like Alia Bhatt, Vicky Kaushal, Soni Razdan, Jaideep Ahlawat, Rajit Kapur and others. The 2018 espionage thriller is based on a book by Harinder Sikka, Calling Sehmat. The film revolves around Sehmat (Bhatt) who decides to turn a spy for RAW amid the mounting tensions between India and Pakistan.

Sehmat is married off to Iqbal Syed (Vicky Kaushal), who is the son of Brigadier Syed of the Pakistan army. Iqbal himself is a soldier in the army and he too agrees to marry Sehmat. However, before Sehmat is married she is trained by Khalid Mir (Jaideep Ahlawat) as an agent of RAW. After marrying Iqbal, Sehmat does everything in her power to stay undercover and provide information to Indian agency, RAW. In the process, she goes against her morality, life lessons and even her very values. The story delves deeper into the emotional exploitation of a woman undercover agent who risks everything to save her nation. While there are several grounds to choose Raazi, here are 5 major reasons why Alia and Vicky starrer should be on your watch list!

1.Alia Bhatt as Sehmat is every bit amazing

Seeing the bubbly and chirpy Alia Bhatt transform into a mature yet determined Sehmat is a treat you wouldn’t want to miss. Alia as Sehmat reels you in with her eyes and her subtle expressions. From agreeing to her father’s wish to training hard to be a spy, Alia captures the essence of every moment in the story in a perfect way and not for a second anything seems forced. Alia’s brilliant acting in the raw moments when she is vulnerable, broken and lost is laudable. When she kills her own brother-in-law to protect her cover from being blown, she is broken, full of remorse and we get to see the toll it takes on a person to be a spy and go against one’s own morality. Alia as Sehmat is one of the biggest reasons to watch Raazi!

2. Vicky Kaushal as Iqbal Syed wins your heart

Vicky plays the Pakistani Army officer Iqbal Syed who marries Sehmat. For the role, Vicky surely seems to be the apt choice as he manages to nail the role of a loyal Pakistani officer yet never for once undermines or disrespect’s his wife’s country. Despite knowing that Sehmat is from India, Iqbal respects Sehmat and her love for her own nation and lets her be. He even cares for her and makes her feel welcome in the house in the enemy nation. Vicky’s real acting prowess is seen in the climax scenes when he gets to know the truth about his wife being an Indian spy and he too decides to stay loyal to his country. Besides this, Vicky and Alia manage to hold your attention in every scene that they are in. It surely is a treat you must not miss!

3. The real-life hero’s story brought to life by Alia

Calling Sehmat was the book that was based on the real life story of Sehmat, a Kashmiri girl who sacrificed her own life on her dad’s insistence and became a RAW spy. Alia as Sehmat puts in the sincere effort and manages to bring to life the story of a woman whose name was lost in the books and never once was celebrated. If it weren’t for Sehmat, India may not have won the 1971 war with Pakistan. It is because Sehmat and undercover spies like her work day in and out, that the nation is able to sail through difficult times. Raazi celebrates and honours the sacrifice of those unsung heroes and also shows the dark side of what they lose in the process of serving their nation. A reality, that we all must be aware of!

4. 3 amazing songs that are a tribute to unsung heroes

Raazi has 3 main songs composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy but those 3 songs are enough to overwhelm you with emotions. First up, we get to hear Dilbaro, the farewell song that is played when Sehmat aka Alia is married off to Iqbal Syed (Vicky) and is leaving her parents, Hidayat Khan and Teji Khan. The song’s lyrics and the music is so touching that it is bound to leave you teary-eyed. Next up, we get to hear Raazi’s title track when Sehmat is being trained as a spy by Khalid Mir (Ahlawat). The song showcases Sehmat’s journey of being transformed from an ordinary Kashmiri girl into a RAW agent. The tune of it is bound to get stuck in your head and Arijit Singh’s vocals will win you over. However, the best song comes as the last in the film and it is Ae Watan. There are two versions of the song, one in Sunidhi Chauhan’s voice and one in Arijit Singh’s voice. However, it is this song that will swell up your chest with pride about your motherland. No matter how many challenges our country might be facing, the song is about celebrating it anyway. All the 3 songs are surely going to get stuck in your head!

5. Meghna Gulzar’s amazing storytelling

How Meghna Gulzar adapts the real life story of a spy in the form of an engaging yet emotional thriller is what makes Alia and Vicky starrer Raazi a must watch. Meghna’s vision is so clear about what she wanted from her actors in the film that we can almost see how effortlessly the story flows from one scene to another. The seamless flow of thought and how she manages to bring to life this real life story of an unsung hero is commendable and hence, Raazi is a must watch for you amid lockdown. Watch it to salute and pay tribute to the thousands of unsung heroes of India!

I feel both deepika and alia are talented actress. Everyone owns different genre . Alia was best choice for raazi mainly because it was a kind of a role you did not expect her to do . Probably that’s the reason she came out so innocent as sehmat . It felt relatable . No one can be rani padmavati better than deepika . Her Authentic Indian beauty is a bonus . It holds good even for kangana as tanu. Taapsee in badla. I know sonchiriya was a flop . But omg bhumi is someone I will surely bet on . There as quiet a few talented actresses who can carry women centric films now .

Anonymous 3 months ago

Bhumi is my favourite. I loved her dum lagake film . She has beautiful smile

Anonymous 3 months ago

Yar .. Taapsee has grown to be a good actress. She has very subtle acting may be necessary for those roles . But agree she always does similar outspoken out there roles . She has more women centric films than all of these A rated female stars . She comes in category like smitha patil and shabana azmi.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Well ! For me as well taapsee in in the above list you mentioned . She is someone who did out of box movies right from the beginning of her bw career . Pink ,naam shabana, mulk , sik. Thappad. Well many other women centric movies also have men working behind . And politics is something that everyone should be given right to express their opinion . Bhumi I love her , she is underrated I feel . also , for the last comment these UP guys make movies that represent india in global film festivals and win some awards as well . It’s not kjo gang .

Anonymous 3 months ago

UP guys creation tapsee can’t act at all. Her films are carried by men behind the scenes. They do the marketing with twitter people, politicians and media people behind the scenes. Bhumi is awesome.

Raazi would have been a better film with a woman like kareena, kangana or tabu. It was a vanity project planned by KJO and times group to make alia look successful. Until then, her good performances were only in commercial flops. There was an army working to make this film a hit.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Kareena is good for item aunty roles in khan grand paa films or akshay or akshay films. She don't have any stardom to carry an offbeat women centric film.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Yar it was a story of young girl who has not seen the outside world and yet sacrificie her quality of life . Tabu kareena could carry that film few years back not now . KaNgana could have done I believe .

I completely loved Chapaak and Deepika was terrific. Idiot alia pr we will see if you are relevant till 34 as your popularity is already decling because of sara and annanya. Yes character could have been a mature one as deepika can't play a school girl but she did justice to the main story. But I am sure still she won't win awards next year. If Deepika can't win for padmavati and alia can win for gully boy

Anonymous 3 months ago

That's true Alia's role in udta Punjab was class apart and nobody can do it better than her but all the films of deepika you have mentioned are simply commercial films opposite big male actors. Chapaak was her only non commercial film dependent totally on her weak shoulders and she failed to carry the film.

Anonymous 3 months ago

I don’t know why people blame just for the sake of it . Deepika also did cocktail , piku , ramleela . Her acting was really good in ramleela . I only reason I hold alia more than deepika Is because of her performance in udta . That’s is not an easy character to potray.

Anonymous 3 months ago

At 25 alia did raazi and at 25 deepika was just a spoiled rich brat only famous for linkup and breakups. Both dated the same men at 25 but both are class apart. And please don't call deepika an outsider she was the daughter of a renowned sports personality.

Anonymous 3 months ago

For the past couple of years AB is going downhill thanx to her friendship with RK.

Anonymous 3 months ago

May be you are talking about Deepika. In past couple of years alia won 2 filmfare awards and ranbir too won filmfare and gave biggest hit of his career. Both are really luck for each other.

Anonymous 3 months ago

I think it’s the other way round.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Alia is gifted actress . I don’t like kjo gang or even alias offscreen personality . But she is definitely a good actress . Vicky was fanstastic and so were all others . Raazi success is also because of music and lyrics of those songs which brought out the feeling of every scene .

Anonymous 3 months ago

So true. The crying scene was awful.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Yeah she is so gifted actress that's why the last scene where she cried loudly in raazi was same as her crying scene in udta Punjab. People think flarring nosetills and crying loud is good acting. And ofcourse there are paid reviews.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Alia did well in raazi. Even though she is from nepo gang , I cannot forget her performance in highway, udta Punjab , raazi and gullyboy . Her other super hits dulhaniya ones is just becoz of nepo and ofcourse dance and songs

Anonymous 3 months ago

So true. I stopped watching film fare awards after that

Anonymous 3 months ago

Highway ? She was Awful in that film and didn't even deserve to be in that film. Yes in udta Punjab she was terrific and deserved awards but raazi and gully boy definitely are not award winning performances. Thanks to her Filmfare lost its credibility.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Yup, Vicky was amazing.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Vicky has lost the charm . Don’t feel like watching him anymore after his success, his public image has changed . I think so his anticipated wedding video will make more at box office than any of his future movies .

Anonymous 3 months ago

Vicky was no doubt good in raazi . But by far his best performance is his first film masaan . I have watched masaan years back but still can’t get over the innocence and hope that he brought as deepak . I want to see him in such roles . But he is a star now , wants to appear more like hot commodity like other Bollywood actors .

Anonymous 3 months ago

Raazi was a good movie but way tooooo overrated.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Anyone would have done amazing, not just Alia. Vicky killed it in the small role he had and was underrated. Kangana would have been amazing too

Anonymous 3 months ago

I don’t think vicky was underrated . His character was small . But thanks to Meghana she envisioned Iqbal beautifully . That role is one such example where even small roles stand out in the film if they drive the story.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Kjo gives all the best roles to Alia, and skin showing or obscene sexy kind roles to kiara..

Anonymous 3 months ago

Acha. Have you watched 2 States?

Anonymous 3 months ago

Or to sidharth malhotra, to change things a bit he is making him captain batra to sanitize rumors.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Poster face of struggling Outsiders standing with Poster face of Nepotism. How lame Bollywood is.

Anonymous 3 months ago

A hero who got National award for his first solo lead role whereas a heroine who couldn't win a single national award in 8 years despite getting the best opportunities.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Raazi was Even though a patriotic movie , it was shown more like a humanity story . It was also a love story . After her task sehmat gives up , that’s indicative that she loved iqbal. Btw , if you can please watch mahanati, Kerry hu suresh won national award for it for same year . If you see that performance, you would not feel alia deserved it for raazi. But that does not make alia a bad actor.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Shut up idiot. Both raazi and Uri were patriotic films. Accept it alia that alia buys reviews and filmfare awards. But she can not buy national awards.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Well the reason for hero winning the national award is film not mere his performance. He is good but would have had hard time to get national award if not that movie .

Anonymous 3 months ago

If only KJO could get her a national award, Alia would have got a national award for every single movie she has done. Lol

Anonymous 3 months ago

If the same movie was done by Kangana, she would have nailed an another national award. But Kjo gave that role away to this mouse face

Anonymous 3 months ago

Of course all the awards Alia received are either bought or influenced by KJo.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Chapaak with alia could have easily done 100 cr business as alia has the biggest youth connect. Deepika is 34 now and not popular among youth anymore like she was 5 years ago. Also she didn't look like a 15 years old girl in school uniform. She didn't look vulnerable.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Agree , after seeing deepika in historical and exuberant movies , could not relate to her as that character . She appeared to be more matured than that character required from the beginning . In short she was not relatable

Anonymous 3 months ago

Meghna is a terrific director. Chapaak was also good but instead of deepika she should have worked with alia and it could have easily done 70-80 Cr business. Deepika's cheap publicity stunt robbed the film of its credibility.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Deepika's paying a visit to JNU wasn't a "cheap publicity stunt". Both the actresses have done beautiful jobs in their respective roles.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Alia is queen of bollywood currently. Soon your deepika will be a servant to ranbir to get films with him and save her sinking career.

Anonymous 3 months ago

Both are mediocre actress but well over hyped. One overhyped by her PR and the other by papa Kjo

Anonymous 3 months ago

Deepika is queen and alia don't even deserves to be her servant.

Anonymous 3 months ago

What a fab movie . Patriotic at the same time first not give any scope to hate the other side . Beautifully directed and performed.
