Ranbir Kapoor starrer Sanju was hailed by one and all and thus became a massive hit at the box-office. In the latest revelation, Rajkumar Hirani has admitted to making changes in the film to create empathy for the actor. While speaking at a masterclass held by Indian Film and TV Directors Association, Mr Hirani revealed that the test screenings for Sanju evoked a negative reaction for the protagonist Sanjay Dutt. The negative reactions led the director to make changes in the script of his blockbuster in order to create empathy for the actor.
While speaking at the event, Hirani said, “During the shoot, I felt ‘What am I doing, I’m going wrong.’ In fact, when the first edit was ready and we screened for people, they hated him. They said we don’t like this man, we don’t want to watch him”. “Because I wanted to do a true story, I didn’t create any empathy towards him. I said let’s not create empathy and show (him) as he is. But later I understood that he is our hero, we need some empathy for him,” the director added.

Rajkumar Hirani, who was in conversation with writer Anjum Rajabali at the IFTDA said he had to add a certain scene in Sanju to create empathy for its lead character, which was not there earlier. “The scene where he tries to kill himself after the verdict is out; which he had mentioned to me but we didn’t put in the film, I shot it later. It was not in the original script. I thought through this some empathy will come... The initial test reactions were like ‘naah we don’t like this guy...’ Every film is a journey. Some things work and some don’t. I still see flaws in the film but you try your best and hope your best is good enough.”

Sanjay Dutt’s biopic was released in June and broke box-office records just within a few weeks after the release. The 3 Idiots director, however, met with a lot of criticism that the film never questioned Dutt’s intentions as the film showed the actor as a victim of circumstances. It was being said that whatever Dutt did, he always did it with good intentions behind every bad choice he made. Hirani has however said that he is critical of Dutt’s actions, though he believes the actor could be flawed but always harmless.
Sanju also featured Sonam Kapoor, Tabu, Anushka Sharma, Dia Mirza, Paresh Rawal amongst others along with Ranbir Kapoor as the main lead.

And that is why I've not watched it, and will not watch it, even though I've watched all of Hirani's previous movies the week they came out.

If I really make a biopic on Gandhi I think there are some scenes that Gandhi want to show to society that he is harmless to women that is the reason he slept around nude women and due to that those nude woman life's are spoiled so if I let this scene in movie will you accept Gandhi as hero no so there is no different rule for Gandhi and sanju at last both were men and we have to show true stories if one sequence or one scene which bothers the flow of movie we must not consider it I think hirani did exactly that

Audience could sue this guy, the sold the movie to audience by calling it biopic and clearly it wasn’t.

I reeeeeallly do not understand the hype around Ranbir. At best, he can portray a very urban character but that's it. I can never imagine him as a Bajirao or a Khilji or even a regular small town chaiwala or such. He played Sanju well because he has a certain resemblance to Dutt that made it easy for the public to imagine it was Sanjay. As for Hirani, the joke is on those who think he is some "great" filmmaker. This proves he won't take risks but will change anything so the money rolls in.
PV please post this.

I would say one word to you wait till shamshera comes bloddy

Mr Hirani should have attempted biopic on Sunil Dutt... loved him, ppl would have been more intresdted in him rather...

He lied and made a lot of money...now he wants to tell the truth. He and Sanjay have more in common than we thought. They'll do near anything for money.

Just after the film.. Namrutha dutt sister of Sanjay Dutt said.. I didn't connect with my fathers role.. My father was nothing like that.. Not we audience namrutha dutt daughter of Nargis and Sunil dutt said this publicly... I'm sure she felt the same with Ranbir's character as well but hesitated to say.. Ranbir's acting was good not great his makeup was extraordinary he should get the credit.. Just because he looked like Sanjay dutt if call that as great acting.. Omg then where is your standard??

I think you did not have brain to recognize acting well you need treatment

LOST ALL RESPECT for Rajkumar Hirani after watching two biased movies of his- one PK (preferred Oh My God) & another one Sanju...He can direct well though even the most unconvincing story

I actually couldn't empathize with the character at all. In fact, the movie was way too preachy and tried to be manipulative, pushing the character's "suffering" down the audience's throats. I just thought Sanju the character was a total brat. The only saving grace was Vicky Kaushal's character Kamli. My least favourite Hirani film.

Hume acha pagal bnaya hai Raju hirani tumne .Sanjay dutt ko esa masoom dikhaya gaya hai ki bas pucho mat.Bechare ne drugs isiliye kare kyunki uski mother bimaar thi ,phir usne 350 girls ko date kia aur esa dikhaya gyaa ki wahh kya stud hai then terrorist.Ohh sorry sanjay dutt is everything but not a terrorist .bechare ne apni family protection ke liye AK 46 rakhi thi.Hum pagal hai kya .Family protection k liye log revolver rakhte hai AK 47 nae.Acha pagal bnaya hirani sahab apne .Esa dikhaya gaya hai ki sanjay dutt bhagwan hai.Arey jaaoo tum .

I have been saying this from Day 1. Sanjay was not a guy who was just "caught" in between the mafia world. He knowingly maintained close contact with the gang members and when he got caught, he was like oh crap this is what happens when you mingle with these people. He was responsible for EVERYTHING that happened in his life. They should have made a movie on Sunil Dutt not Sanjay!

such frauds. they made their 300 crores and now they admit to sugarcoating his life story to make him seem like a saint. i hope when people look back at this movie, they know exaactly what it is: propaganda +easy money.

I know right! Hirani even acted offended and blasted one of the reporters for asking if he had fictionalized the story. Fucking hypocrites. I have friends and colleagues who thought it was a great movie just because this dipshit directed it. A lot of them even sympathized with him. It was propaganda and it worked on the gullible.

hipsdontlie:I am your fan man... You always have such well thought comments.. keep going!!

Ranbir is not versatile.. haha good joke
you may not like him as a person but he is a great actor and has proven it many times

Raju sir, big difference between EMPATHY and SYMPATHY. Everyone knows about Sanjay Dutt's life and how sad some stuff is like how his mother he loved and was close to died young, even poetically, never made it to his first movie. We can put ourselves in his shoes when you show stuff like that well, understand how and why he turned to drugs and all. But you LIE in your movie to make use sympathize and pity him, "The guns did it themselves, a gun ruined my life!" as though he was an innocent soul caught in a bad situation.

I feel like this movie won’t weather well. In a couple of years people will be like why did it make so much money, like dhoom 3 and happy new year.

This was one of the worst films in recent memory. Just a bunch of crap

He sold his soul.
He's going to regret making this movie.

As if none of us knew this before

this movie ws a joke

No matter what all you say... If you ask me to choose one extraordinary performance in Indian cinema.. That's Bajirao played by Ranveer singh... No one can touch it.. I think he himself can't touch it again!

I was surprised ranveer didn’t get the national award for BM. Amitabh who won for Piku was cute but no where near as memorable.

I feel like that about Shahid in Haider. I personally think Ranbir was good in Rockstar but then he has played that role so many times that that one performance doesnt look anything significant

Raju hirani is one director give him any subject, any actor he will make it work.. He will make us to believe that subject and the actor both are great.. He did the same this time as well.. Even though subject wasn't that great.. Except Ranbir looks like sanju I don't he's that great... But raju directed in such a way that.. We have to accept it

Of course I knew this.. Because you watch this movie you will clearly get a doubt.. But all this doubt and confusion flys away bcz of Raju Hirani's incredible direction skill... Even though Ranbir is not versatile you will be forced to believe.. That's the magic of Raju hirani.. You can any subject, any actors to him.. He will make it work.. Hats off to this man
