Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif were one of the hottest couples in B-town. The two starred together for the first time in Rajkumar Santoshi's Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani (2009) and reportedly, this is when the love started to blossom between the two. Ranbir and Katrina dated each other for around 6 years. The two parted ways in 2015 and since then they have maintained a dignified silence on their break up. However, post the infamous break-up, Kat and Ranbir worked together in Anurag Basu’s Jagga Jasoos, which did a decent performance at the box-office.
When it comes to their Bollywood debuts, Ranbir Kapoor made his Bollywood debut with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya. He went on to win the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut. His career includes some exemplary performances in movies like Wake Up Sid, Rockstar, Anjana Anjani, Barfi, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.
On the other hand, Katrina made her Bollywood debut with Boom (2013), a critical and commercial failure. However, later, she earned a lot of praise and adulation for her spectacular performances in movies – Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya (2005) and Namastey London (2007). She is currently basking in the success of her latest release, Tiger Zinda Hai opposite Salman Khan.
Interestingly, Ranbir and Katrina were introduced to each other by Deepika Padukone in 2008, whom he was dating at that time. It was Katrina’s birthday bash where Deepika took Ranbir along. It was in 2009, when the two met officially as they teamed up for their film, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. However, at that time, Katrina was dating Salman Khan and Ranbir was still dating Deepika.
After the release of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, their sizzling on-screen chemistry became the talk of the town. This also created trouble in Deepika-Ranbir’s paradise and finally, they broke up in 2010. In an interview, Ranbir confessed that he had cheated in a relationship.’’ Yes, I've cheated, out of immaturity, out of inexperience, out of taking advantage of certain temptations, out of callousness. You realise it now, when you grow up and you value it more why be in a relationship, why be committed to someone when you cannot be committed,’’ Ranbir had said.
Soon after Ranbir and Deepika’s breakup, the rumors of Salman and Katrina breaking up with each other also started doing the rounds. And, finally, they parted ways in a hush-hush manner.
After Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani, the two starred in Raajneeti (2010). However, till that time nothing was ever confirmed by them. In July 2013, Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif were spotted holidaying in Ibiza, Spain. The images of the two went viral on the internet and it turned everyone’s doubts into reality. Moreover, in an episode of Koffee with Karan season four, Kareena Kapoor Khan had said that she plans to dance on 'Chikni Chameli' at Ranbir and Katrina's wedding, putting another family stamp on the relation that was yet to be officially announced.
By late 2013, Ranbir and Katrina began making confident, public appearances - a clear suggestion of maturity and stability in their relationship. In 2014, both the actors had admitted in different interviews that they hold a special place in each other’s lives. Katrina had said, "He is an extremely important person in my life. I have a lot of regard for him. He is an amazing person, and an amazing actor. That’s the best way I can put it. And I feel everyone — to a large extent — is aware of his presence in my life."
On the other hand, Ranbir had said, "My family, Ayan, Katrina, as she is a very special person in my life, Rohit Dhawan, who I grew up with, and Aisha Divetri, my school friend. And Imtiaz Ali and Anurag Basu, as they add a lot to my life."
In 2014, Ranbir and Katrina moved in together in their new house in suburban Mumbai. They reportedly also hosted a housewarming party for their close friends at their new place. 2015 opened with another big breaking news - there were reports that Ranbir and Katrina’s got secretly engaged in London on December 30, 2014 in the presence of family members and a few close friends.
In 2016, there were reports that Kat and Ranbir were planning to get married anytime soon. In an interview with a leading newspaper, Ranbir had said, "This year, there's a lot of pressure on me because of work. I feel I won't be able to make the time. I'm thinking of getting married towards the end of next year. Till now, that's the plan for me and her."
However, during the promotions of his movie, Bombay Velvet, Ranbir had dismissed the marriage rumors by saying, "Yes, I am in love but I have not made any marriage plans yet. There are so many rumors surrounding my marriage like sometime people have quoted me that I am getting married next year. But there are no plans as such." Moreover, Katrina had also stated that there were no plans of wedding anytime soon.
Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor parted ways during the shoot of Jagga Jasoos in January, 2016. There were also reports that the two didn’t get along well during the shooting of the film. Post the breakup, when Ranbir was asked about his personal relationship with Katrina Kaif, he had said, ‘’My relationship with Katrina, whatever has been said or written by the media or the conjectures, it has always been a very positive one. I don’t think I can miss having her in my life. I need her in my life. She has such a positive influence on me, as a person and as an actor, and she’ll continue being that. That’s what it is. There is nothing like not talking to each other or not showing up. It was a lot of hard work not just by me but also by her. She is equally as important in the film as I am. She has stood by this film for three and a half years. She is the producer of this film. I am very grateful for that partnership I have with her. I admire it.’’
In one of her interviews sometime back, Katrina had shared her thoughts on the entire break-up episode. She had said, ‘’The last year-and-a-half has been, at many times, extremely rough and trying for me. I think I’m still in the transition period till I find myself and learn a lot more about myself. I am happy in this phase. I’m working hard and understanding the joys of a film set. But I’m still in a phase where there’s a lot of uncertainty.”
Well, the two now seem to have moved on in their lives. Ranbir is currently prepping up for Ayan Mukerji’s Brahamastra, opposite Alia Bhatt. Katrina, on the other hand, is busy shooting for Aanand L Rai’s Zero, which also stars Anushka Sharma and Shah Rukh Khan in the lead roles.
