Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon are all praises for the POCSO Act amendment
Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon gave a thumbs up to the POCSO Act amendment which allows courts to award death penalty to those convicted of raping minors.
The Kathua Rape-Murder case led to a nationwide outcry with questions being raised about the safety of girls. An 8-year-old was kidnapped, sedated, brutally raped for days and then finally murdered.
In what could be termed as good news, The Centre gave its approval to amend the existing Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) Act. Courts are not allowed to award death penalty to those convicted of raping minors.
The punishment in the case of rape of women was increased from 7 to 10 years rigorous imprisonment. On the other hand, in case of a rape of a girl under 16 years of age, the punishment has increased from 10 to 20 years and can extend to life imprisonment. The Cabinet also approved an ordinance of the death penalty to be awarded to rapists of girls below 12 years of age.
Bollywood celebrities have been all praises for the POCSO Act amendment and at an award show, last night, Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon spoke about it.
Shahid said, "A very harsh punishment is required to create a certain mindset in the people who even think of such horrifying crime. It is important to put something very strong as an example for them. I am very happy that the issue has been brought up. People cannot ignore it now since wrong things are happening every time."
On the other hand, Kriti, who termed the crime of rape as animalistic and horrible, said, "Really glad that such a strong punishment would be given to such people. I am really happy that it has finally happened. I feel angry whenever I hear about such cases. But we have to fast-track such cases. I hope the government would address the issue for ensuring speedy justice to the victims."
