If there is a film in 2019 that has managed to become a success and leave behind many other releases, it is Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani’s Kabir Singh. The film has managed to gross over Rs 272 Crore at the domestic box office and is the biggest hit of 2019 so far. Despite the criticism that Shahid and the director, Sandeep Vanga faced for creating a flawed character, Kabir Singh became the biggest hits of Shahid’s career and catapulted him into the big leagues.

The star spoke at length about the love he received from the people in a recent interview with GQ magazine. Shahid mentioned that despite the criticism, he felt that people loved the film with the same obsession as Kabir loved Preeti in it. The Kabir Singh star clarified that even small budget films can become big hits and stated that the budget of the film is no longer a criterion for success. Shahid even quoted the example of Uri and mentioned that no one had thought that small films would become such huge hits.

Shahid expressed his gratitude to people and said, “I feel like people are loving the film and the character – almost the way Kabir loves Preeti. I’ve read every review of Kabir Singh. The negative ones felt like propaganda. People who had a narrative they wanted to focus on used Kabir Singh as an opportunity.” Talking about the numbers, Shahid said, “The two most successful films of this year are Kabir Singh and Uri. Nobody thought these films would get these numbers.”

Shahid went on to express that with the coming of success with Kabir Singh, perception of people who earlier thought that his career was over has changed. The 38-year-old actor was amused how people treated him differently and stated that there were people who stuck by his side no matter what and that Kabir Singh’s success is like validation to their trust in him. The actor believed that he has done great work in the past too. But with Kabir Singh, the thing that changed in his filmography was numbers.
