Shahid Kapoor's latest outing as Maharawal Ratan Singh in Padmaavat was thoroughly loved by everyone. He starred along with Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh, who played the roles of Rani Padmavati and Sultan Alauddin Khilji respectively.

A lot has been spoken about the film being more focussed on Khilji and when a leading daily asked Shahid about the same, he spoke about why he agreed to be a part of Padmaavat. Shahid stated, "On a personal level, it was a huge risk for me. Everyone I know told me not to do the film. They said, ‘It already has Ranveer and Deepika, so why do you want to be the third spoke in the wheel?’ Honestly, even I believed that in the beginning. I thought to myself, it must be a guest appearance. Why would Bhansali sir suddenly think about it two months after the other star cast was announced? But I’m such a huge lover of his work that I had to meet him to try and understand what was going on. He insisted on coming home."

He further spoke about this being the first film he did after having daughter Misha Kapoor. Shahid said, "I had just had my daughter. And this was the first thing I was starting after Misha’s birth. It was an important juncture in my life. Marriage, baby, etc. I was a young father who was in his first year-and-a-half of his marriage. You get the picture, right? Udta Punjab and Haider had worked, Shandaar had not. So, it was a time of transit. It was this time when I had one foot in success and the other in failure. And I was trying to find out how I was going to move forward. When Sanjay sir came, he just looked at me and told me what was the role. He asked me, ‘Why do you think that the negative character is the only character that matters? Even the positive character can be good.’"

Shahid added, "He assured me that I would be happy at the end of the experience and I said, ‘Yes’ to the project. I didn’t even read the script. I wanted to work with him on the basis of that trust. However, 10 days before filming, he told me, ‘If you don’t read the script, I won’t start the shoot because tomorrow I don’t want you to say, this is not the way I thought it would be’. I read the script and realised why he chose me and not a newcomer. I understood he wanted a recognised face of a certain value to play this role."

When asked about the love story between Deepika and him, Kapoor said, "People have seen Ranveer and Deepika together in two of Sanjay sir’s earlier films — Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram Leela and Bajirao Mastani. They liked them in both, but in Padmaavat, there is a strong love story between Maharawal Ratan Singh (me) and his queen Rani Padmavati (Deepika). The characters of Ranveer and Deepika don’t have a single shot together."

He concluded by saying, "Also, there is a lot of drama between all the three characters. There is drama between Khilji and Ratan Singh and between him and Padmavati. That needed to work. Sanjay sir has offered me a good part. And those who have seen the film have understood why I did this role."

I swear to god they should just kill the make-up artist! what a terrible job!

what is wrong with you lot? i watched the movie yesterday and shahid certainly did surprise me with his performance as a calm composed king, haters back off

Whats everyone's problem Here? Shahid you're a great actor and you don't need to justify yourself to anyone. I haven't seen Padmavati but am sure Shahid has nailed his role. And why would Shahid be jealous of Ranveer or Ranveers role in the film? Shahid has already done something similar in Kaminey couple of years ago.

I thought Shahid just didn’t have that presence or persona to play a role. Someone like a Hritik Roshan or even Sonu Sood would have been more apt for the role.

Go watch the movie. he is majestic. he is supposed to represent purity and he does. there is no rule book that says a king has to be 6 feet tall. he can be 5'8"

He is as majestic as a puppet king!

Good heavens !! Shahid stop being a cry baby!! Mira plz do sth.. post a cute photo of Misha quickly !!

Shahid please move on

He is making a FOOL out of himself for the past 6-7 months now. Somebody please tell him to cut it and focus on work instead! There is seriously something wrong with this guy!

Oh My God! This guy is such a crybaby!
Priyanka nailed her role in Bajirao Mastani so much so that Mastani seemed like a homewrecker.
Richa Chaddha nailed her role in Ram Leela inspite of having such a small screen time! Even Jim Sarbh killed it as Malik Kafur.
Shahid should hone his acting skills first before going out and badmouthing everyone and everything around.
Partially because he lacked star power even Karni Sena starting rioting saying that the Rajputs were shown weak!

ok shahid needs to stop. this has gone beyond jealousy and insecurity. no director or producer of any repute will touch him after these snide comments against his director and costars. he is seriously trying to blame his wooden performance, lack of chemistry and poor critics reception on his "young father" (he is in his mid 30s) and newlywed status!! LMAO. and people say women shouldn't work after marriage because taking care of children and husband will distract them from work. the ironic thing is that shahid married a housewife who has hired workers to help with housework and childcare and he still couldnt focus on his work. how sad.

I'm sorry but i'm getting really tired of him and his constant passive aggressive whining. He KNEW his role was a weak one and that it wouldn't stand up to Deepika's and Ranveer's from the get go when he signed the dotted line. Now he's pretty much just going around talking to EVERYONE about it with a passively negative stance. At this point, I really wish someone else had done it. They probably would've been more grateful.

The character of Shahid was a weak one. Such a pity as he’s normally a great actor. He would have been much better in Ranveers role.

He should have known the meaty role would go to Ranveer obviously. All that stuff Ranveer says about not sure if he wanted to do the villain role is bullshit. He knew what it was and Shahid should have as well. If you knowingly accept it dont sulk and throw indirect shade. He makes himself look like an idiot and puts the film down. He did the same thing to Fardeen Khan in Fida if you guys can remember. The only difference was Fardeen was going to beat the crap out of him and here Ranveer is just being patient and ignoring him.

I beg to differ. Ranveer worked hard to make the role his own.

What are you disagreeing about?

I would have also told him 'No' if he had asked for my advice. It did absolutely nothing for him. The character was stiff and his dialogues were boring. He performed well, but there's only so much you can do with a poorly written character.

He's being honest and he is a senior to both RS and DP. Kudos to him for taking it up and doing a great job.

hehehehehehe.. looks like Selena Gomez with a mustache and a beard.. lolololollyy....

"I read the script and realised why he chose me and not a newcomer. I understood he wanted a recognised face of a certain value to play this role." Stop blowing your own trumpet. Ranveer and Deepika both were miles ahead of you.

Shahid is liked elswere but pinkvilla bcz bebo and her gang

Shahid did an equally good job as did Deepika and Ranveer in their respective roles. The film is a hit because of Sanjay Bhansali's vision, execution and the superb performances by all the main leads. Shahid's haters can take a walk because he is not less than anyone else. I am not Mira but a lover of good performances. All the three main leads portrayed such excellent roles and expressed so well with their eyes and body. I'd like to see them together in a rom-com now

Why aren’t people allowing Shahid to talk about his role when Ranveer and Deepika are doing it? They all put effort into making this movie a good one. Let them be proud of their effort.

Ok good now shut it

Shahid had equally long role as ranger and Deepika. Infact Shahid came out very strong. The movie wouldn't have this impact without Shahid's presence.

Move on flop actor....You are behaving as if you are the greatest actor in the world...

Dude, i like you but LET.IT.GO.

A good attempt at damage control Shahid. Instead of passive agressively tweeting all this time, you should have given an interview clearly stating your views.

I don’t understand why people keep saying he’s insecure. What he says totally makes sense and being a person who never watched his movies before Padmaavat, I definitely liked him in Padmaavat.

completely insecure

Omg. Stoooooppp it shahid. Stop digging.

Lame justifications,as Ranveer Singh got more attention, least you could have ask for upper billing in credits being a senior, but they treated u like a flop star,it's Tit for Tat..
Someone like Arjun Rampal should have done this,as it needed more mature actor, and someone who could comfortably accept a second billing..SLB robbed you

Rampal cant act like Shahid..

Rampal has a national award. Dont say he cant act. He has improved since younger days unlike shahid who only got worse with age
