Movie name: Thackeray
Director: Abhijit Panse
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Amrita Rao

One of the much awaited films this month, Thackeray, starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the Shiv Sena supremo Balasaheb Thackeray, released today and party workers as well as fans of the actor thronged cinema halls to watch the film. The trailer had given us a glimpse into Bal Thackeray’s life and the massive number of followers he used to address at Shivaji Park in Mumbai. But, the movie surely epitomises the politician in an unadulterated sense. Nawaz's striking resemblance with the political leader took everyone by surprise.

However, many are unaware of the fact that Nawazuddin Siddiqui was not the first choice to play Bal Thackeray. In fact, it was 'Hindi Medium' actor Irrfan Khan, whom the makers were considering to rope in for the part. Casting director Rohan Mapuskar revealed to Mid-Day that the makers were keen to cast Irrfan Khan for the lead role but things didn't work out as planned. It could possibly be due to Irrfan's ill health. Mapuskar also added that Irrfan was available for the project only after a period of two to three months.

Speaking about Nawazuddin coming on board, Mapuskar said, "Director Abhijit Panse told us that during certain pandals, Mr Thackeray would be seated with the Karyakartas on the floor. Following subsequent discussion, we felt that Nawaz would be a better choice for the depiction of such scenes when compared to Irrfan. Zeroing in on him was a consensual decision."

Meanwhile, apart from Thakceray, Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi also released today and it will be interesting to see which film does better at the box office. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.
