Renowned music director-composer Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi, affectionately termed as Khayyam is reportedly in a very critical condition due to infection in lungs and has been admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of Sujay Hospital as informed by BN Tiwari, the President of the Federation of Western India Cine Employees Union. The veteran music composer is a recipient of Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and Padma Bhushan and is known for his sensational compositions in films like 'Kabhie Kabhie' and 'Umrao Jaan.'

Khayyam began his career at the tender age of 17 in the city of Ludhiana. He got his first big break in blockbuster 'Umrao Jaan' through which he established himself as a prominent name in the Bollywood industry.  He is a National Award and Filmfare Award winner and is also recognized for his non-film music compositions such as 'Paaon padun tore shyam,' 'Brij mein laut chalo' and 'Ghazab kiya tere vaade pe aitbaar kiya.' He has also given music for late Meena Kumari's album, 'I Write, I Recite' featuring 'nazms' (poems) sung by her.

Khayyam was born in a town in Nawanshahr District in Punjab. As a boy, he ran away to Delhi to learn music but was forced to return to complete his education. Khayyam then went to Lahore to learn music from the famous Baba Chishti. Impressed with his zeal, Chishti gave him an offer of joining him as an assistant and from there he embarked on his journey into music.
