Akshay Kumar starrer Gold which released today i.e. 15 August is based on Independent India’s first Olympic gold medal win. In the movie, Akshay who plays the role of a manager of Hockey team is the hero but the real hero of the 1948 hockey team during Olympic games was Balbir Singh.  Balbir Singh was the part of the Indian team at 1948 London Olympics and played the vital role in India’s win. During the match, he scored maximum goals. The Indian team defeated the British team to win India’s first gold medal. It was the country's first Olympic gold medal since India became independent and it was hailed by the whole nation back then.

“It happened 70 years ago, but it feels like only yesterday. The Tiranga rose up slowly. With our National Anthem being played, my freedom-fighter father's words 'Our Flag, Our Country' came flooding  - I finally understood what he meant. I felt rising off the ground alongside the fluttering Tiranga," he told TOI. Singh, who is the first sports personality to be honored with the Padma Shri award is only one with the highest goals scored in Olympics’ individual men hockey. A video of Balbir Singh relieving memories of the 1948 London Olympics has resurfaced on the internet and the same is must-watch.
