Girish Karnad's funeral a low key affair as close friends, family pay their last respects

Girish Karnad passed away today after suffering from a prolonged illness and the family decided to avoid any sort of processions or public viewing, respecting the veteran's last wishes.

The Kannada film industry and the Indian cinema at large suffered a huge a loss today as veteran actor and playwright Girish Karnad passed away in Bengaluru after suffering from a prolonged illness. The actor who starred in several Hindi and Kannada films was beloved by industry folks and many celebrities took to social media to express their grief. It is reported that the 81-year-old actor passed away due to multiple-organ failure at his residence. Close friends and family turned up for the funeral which was held in Bengaluru today.

The event was a low-key affair and the family decided to avoid any sort of processions or public viewing, respecting the veteran's last wishes. According to reports, the cremation, which will not include any religious rituals, will be held at an electric crematorium, reported The Week.

One of his former co-star Shabana Azmi shared an old picture of Girish and her and wrote, "Will miss you #Girish Karnad." Director Ali Abbas Zafar who worked with Girish Karnad in the film Tiger Zinda Hai in 2017 wrote on his Twitter page, "Rest in peace sir #GirishKarnad , man with a golden heart  and fountain of knowledge RIP." 

The actor is known for playing some memorable characters like Swami's father in Malgudi Days. Karnad’s other well-known films in Kannada include Tabbaliyu Neenade Magane (1977) and Ondanondu Kaaladalli (1978). He also worked in Hindi, directing the critically acclaimed Utsav (1984). From winning the Padma Bhushan to the Jnanpith Award, India’s highest literary prize, Girish Karnad exemplified talent and is the true epitome of Indian cinema.

The veteran is survived by his wife Saraswathi, son Raghu Karnad, a journalist and writer and daughter Radha, a doctor based in Kenya.
