Rashid Khan has been appointed as Afghanistan's captain in all formats of the game. The spinner takes over the responsibilities from Gulbadin Naib, who was sacked after a disastrous World Cup 2019 campaign, where the side was unable to win any match.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board had taken drastic steps before the campaign, removing skipper Asghar Afghan from the leaership roles, and making Naib the captain. However, Naib's poor decision-making skills came to the fore in various games, especially against Pakistan, and since then, there were rumours that he could be stripped off the top role. Aghan has now been appointed Rashid Khan's deputy.

Under Afghan, Afghanistan had won 31 ODIs, and the move to remove him from captaincy for the World Cup had caused displeasure among the players, with cricketers like Rashid taking to Twitter to express their disappointment. Afghan had also helped his team to their first Test win over Ireland ealier this year. He has been a regular for the side since 2009.

The side's World Cup campaign was not short of controversey either, with Mohammad Shahzad being sent back home despite being fit, and Aftab Alam getting banned due to disciplinary reasons.

Rashid will lead the side in a one-off Test against Bangladesh in September, which will be followed by a tri-series that will involve the hosts and Zimbabwe. West Indies will then play Afghanistan at home in Novembner,
