When the makers announced a biopic based on the life of slain air hostess Neerja Bhanot starring Sonam Kapoor, there were suspicions. The lead actress in question is a fashionista, whose dressing sense makes more headlines than her acting laurels. But nine years after she debuted as a coy girl in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya, she has come of age. She might not be the best choice for a film like Neerja, but she will still make you root for her with her honesty and vulnerability. She bares her soul in this performance which any day, trumps over finesse.

It is half the battle won when you have a powerful story to tell. But the tough part about biopics is that it is difficult to make people care about a something that’s so widely known. Who hasn’t heard about the hero of the Pan Am Flight 73 hijack who was posthumously awarded honours? But Ram Madhvani takes on the challenge of retelling Neerja’s story with a fresh perspective, unperturbed by what has already been documented on her. Instead of weaving the narrative on the lines of how a valiant flight attendant sacrificed herself on the line of duty, he makes Neerja a regular girl, who was crushed by her heartbreak, who blossomed in the love of the new man in her life. Her spirit is what the story stays focused on. When you watch the film, it is easy to see where Neerja got her guts from. As her past and present pan out simultaneously in the film, we can notice how well writer Saiwyn Quadras have gauged the woman’s psyche and brought it out in the screenplay. Neerja derives her courage from her own personal experiences and the screenplay tells exactly how she manages to brave the terrorists single-handedly without succumbing to their demands. Lamentably, she succumbed to her physical wounds. The celebration of her indomitable spirit that pushed her to do the unimaginable is what gives the film a strong footing.

As the movie paces up towards the gruelling 17 hours of hijack, Ram maintains grip for most part. There is the adequate amount of tension with a commendable lack of Bollywood ornamentation, which could have run down the effort. The screenplay is tight and as the director sticks religiously to the written word, the movie meanders very little. For every minute inside the aircraft, the vibe of the film is strained. The terrorists (though we are told almost nothing about their intention, their cause and what drives their blood-thirsty ruthlessness) look as menacing as their part adding the right amount of macabre to the screenplay. It might seem a little overdramatized in places but the impact is spot-on. Luckily, the film stays low on its gore factor, leaving a lot of the brutality to our imagination (thankfully *sigh*).

The curse of the second half strikes at it due time but doesn’t hit that hard. Yes, the grip loosens, the momentum dips but just then Ram plays his best card. He shifts focus to Neerja’s family, her parents, her lover, her ex-husband, all of which works well for the plot. Shabana Azmi, who plays Neerja’s mother, is in her understated best as she takes the viewer through their middle class household of simple hopes, joys and laughs. The film’s best scene comes from her as she talks about how much she misses her daughter. That is at one place Sonam’s heartfelt portrayal seems lackluster. Her sincerity is admirable but the true power of acting cannot be compensated for.

In a film that has some solid acting, a heartwrenching story, a nuanced screenplay and a hero worth celebrating, what wins? To each, their own. For us it was the grit in the plot that never sees a low moment. As the chase to the superlative climax begins, you’ll find your hearts palpitating despite knowing how it is going to end. Team Neerja deserves a pat on their back for recreating a celebrated story with aplomb.

Neerja has a haunting impact. You are terrorized, you are heartbroken, you are overwhelmed but mostly you are deeply influenced by her strength and courage. More than anything else, Neerja is inspiring. Everyone will find their own takeaway from the movie but we can say that for Sonam Kapoor, this will be a red-letter day… the day she proved her critics wrong. Those who wrote her off as a non-actor will sit and notice this sublime act of hers. The actor Sonam Kapoor has arrived. She might not be top notch yet but just like Neerja, she will give every role a tough fight!

We rate the film at 66% on the Pinkvilla Movie Meter.

I cried after watching this film.

A sign of a true actor is one who believes, feels, and loves the character that they are portraying. Sonam nailed it

What a wonderful movie..Salute to Neeraja for her bravery and everything.Shabana Azmi , Sonam and the entire team did a great job. Every one in the theatre couldnt stop crying. Once again Great Job Guys

never cried after watching any sad movie but #neerja your story was too sad to handle. best movie from sonam so far.

movie was fine and sonam's acting as well, better than before. she needs to work more on dialogue delivery ,the way she speaks.good stuff sonam. thumbs up

Neerja is a great movie. Sonam Keep going and select only good movies in the future.

I am so happy for Sonam, after doing so many solo movies she's finally given her solo hit and yeah no Khan, Kumar, Kapoor or Bacchan.. !! You go girl !!

Ok so I watched this movie last night and gave it a bit before writing something about it on this post. Reason being I was frustrated with the audience in the theatre (children crying, people walking around, people walking out), they were very disrespectful-anyways that's just my rant about that. The movie was flawless! Everyone did their job well, of course the person that stood out the most for me was Shabana Azmi (I had almost forgotten why I loved her so much) and second to her was Sonam. Sonam had the right amount emotion for every scene, the poise and restraint required when it was needed (when talking to the children or other passengers, even her own family at the dinner table conversation when she walks away from her marriage) and fear when there is a gun pointed at the back of her head (I could feel her terror) without going over the top with any scene.Yes, her dialogue seemed monotone in one or two places but I believe it was meant to be that way so as to appear in control while agreeing with the children. For people sitting here trying to tear apart her performance to suit there own purpose, you may want to think about what the movie represents and your pettiness. Sonam did a brilliant job and this movie is more important than any other I have seen in a long time. It is to commemorate a real hero, please stop being disrespectful to Neerja, life is too short to sit here and fight over who you think should've done the movie or who is better at what. Give the movie the dignity it deserves they didn't try to throw idiotic songs and extra drama in it to appease anyone and that deserves a lot of respect in my eyes (it's a first for me to watch a BW movie and say that is how a biopic should be done - no OTT drinking milk/dancing scene, no made up extraordinary act. It was a horrific situation where a woman rose to the occasion and didn't let fear defeat her, give her the respect she deserves! Give Sonam the respect she deserves for pouring her heart and soul into a character that obviously meant more than just a role to her. Thank you Sonam for that!

YAY!

Thank you so much for your review MyVoice! & for seeing that it means more to Sonam than just a movie role. Because it does. You write beautifully!

PROUD of Bollywood for giving two movies with a substance in early 2016 Airlift and Neerja.
Neerja is must see movie in a theater. NEERJA was a very brave girl and this movie is made
very well. Kudos to all The Neerja team.
ALL THE FLIMMAKERS SHOULD MAKE A NOTE GOOD MOVIES CAN BE MADE IF THEY WANT TO.

I love Sonam. I just do.

This movie deserves better rating!

PV I request you to post Akhil Bhanot's (Neerja's brother) review of the film. And also post the comment Neerja's classmates left or Sonam. They're truly heart touching!

"Dear Sonam, I wonder if you will get to read this message. Your critics and colleagues will congratulate you for your performance as Neerja... and I believe you will win awards and accolades in truck loads for this movie. But to us who were Neerja's classmates in school you did something much much more. You brought her back to life... after nearly 30 years. She is now back amongst us again. And for that on behalf of the batch of 78 Bombay Scottish Alumnii, her friends and family, I thank you. Sanjit Shastri - batch of 78Bombay Scottish Alumnii." -- B Sanjit Shastri, a classmate of Neerja.

Sonam, take a bow. And kudos to the real Neerja. She truly is a hero. She was brave, she was courageous and she overcame all her fears. We can only aspire to be like her. So glad to see her story being seen across the nation. Hopefully, the world soon.

PS. I also recommend everyone on PV to go and read Akhil Bhanot's (Neerja's brother) review of the film. But grab a tissue, it'll really get you teary eyed.

PV, PLEASE post this!!!

Just watched the movie today. Screen play, direction Awsome. Sonam can't act period.

Good for sonam. .it's really wired that bad actors like fawad sid - aditya refused to work with sonam while she is way better actress and human than them. .....specially ungrateful fawad. ...but it's ok he is digging his own grave. .....please post it PV please don't be biased. .

I am a big Sonam fan too. I absolutely loved fawad and her together and was so happy and looking forward when I heard they might be working together :( But i have yo disagree with fawad not being a good actor.

Fawad is a good actor. And he left Battle for bittora because he isnt ok with kissing

Do you believe this nonsense. .....do you think that sonam gonna force him to kiss her in the movie. ...he spread this to make people think that he so decent. ...he didn't even support her movie like other actors. ...and always destined himself from her. ....please post it guys

Good for sonam....it's really wired that bad actors like fawad - sid - aditya refused to work with sonam while she is way better actress and human than them...specially ungrateful fawad...but it's ok he is digging his own grave. ..please post it PV don't be biased. ...

I cudnt control my tears in the climax :-(

Shouldn't this be higher than 66 if Fitoor was like 55? I remember Dilwale being around 50 too, I'm sorry, I don't understand the scale of these reviews.

Wow!! What a great film. Almost everyone in the hall had tears. Usually most people get up before the end credits even roll out but everyone was seated till the very end. Probably were shaken like me

Wow... Don't remember a movie that everyone who saw it liked. Everyone coming out of theaters are like 10/10. Only few who are not completely won over are like it's ok", 3.5rating. I mean that is incredible., this unanimous love for #neerja!!!

Well, Sonam can act... Now hoping that Katrina can improve

Can't wait to watch it. Neerja is an amazing girl who had bravery beyond her young age.

Dying to see this movie :(

Congrats Team Neerja and Sonam!!

oops, wrong post, lol. Oh well. It works for you too, Anon! :D

I appreciate Sonam for doing a character driven film. But plsss guys. She was just goof and okayish. It was nothing phenomenal. Her acting is still weak in the knees and needs polishing

Good for Sonam. Maybe her moment has finally arrived.

Just saw the film. It's superb. Sonam does an able job. Congrats to her and her loyal fans for the success of the movie. Enjoy the moment!!!

Thank you, our own Pinkvilla Aunty! ;-) :P

Yaaa, Sonaholics are celebrating worldwide right now. haha

We all hope it´s a huge hit because Neerja Bhanot deserves it. What she did was extraordinary.

After all she is Anil Kapoor's daughter. Acting is in her genes. She has shown spunk in the choice of her movies over the last few years - female oriented medium budget movies rather than being mere eye candy in a big budget hero dominated movie!

This movie looked special from the theatrical and looks like Sonam did a good job.

OMG sonam should stick to fashion. SO proud of Neerja but only if some one who can act had done the role.

sonam cannot act...period.

dp fans are so bitter. fact is sonam got better reviews than deepika in BM.

DP and Kangana are overrated we measure them to the likes of Kat that is why they look good

Happy to see such good things said about Neerja. And happy to see that Sonam's performance too is being praised.

99% of the comments here are focusing on sonam's performance. why can't people just appreciate the fact that they made this film and honored such a heroic woman? many ppl did not even know about neerja's life until this movie came into the news! kudos to ram madhvani and fox for making this film.

They're talking about Sonam's performance because from the moment she was casted people kept saying that she would ruin the film !! That's why her fandom is also ecstatic with the praise she is receiving AND THEY SHOULD BE !!

Thankyou Neerja for making India proud and standing against terrorism. Here people are fighting over who should have done justice to the role - sonam, pc,deepika, kangna. Shows their level :) :) .

PS- i personally feel that madam deepika is a bit over-rated actress. i mean i always find her dialogues be it romantic, funny, emotional all delivered in one boring tone(my choice video monotonous tone) . :D :D Sorry fans !! . u can dislike it ... :P :P

Bang on! Deepi's dialogue delivery is her weakest point and diction too. She is super over-rated and her delusional fans try to compare her to PC, Kangy and Karina! I mean it's like totally different leagues.

its not showing level she is not the best actress but this is her best work few scenes she was not good but the story n direction n dialogues r outstanding

#Neerja is an OUTSTANDING film people! sonama kapoor take a bow - you've just re-written your acting legacy!

I was pretty disappointed when I saw the trailer. For some reason, sonam didn't seem too convincing as Neerja at least in the trailer. But I'm so glad to hear all these reviews. Neerja's story deserved to be told beautifully. Can't wait to see this movie!!

I made that comment on one of Sonam's posts earlier that who knows Sonam may give us some amazing performance and many people laughed it off. Well here it is! Sonam is killing it now and gave us a great performance which everyone is raving about. And I'm not even Sonam's fan. Major props! Although I just read that Neerja's mother passed away recently, that is very sad. I really wish she was alive to see this movie being made and now will go down in history. :-(

9.2/10 on IMDb and most critics have given it 4/5! amazing! so happy this film was made well and Sonam gave a great performance too!

I LOVED the movie. And cried through it. Sonam's parts, Shabana's parts, even the end credits made me cry. Obviously I was crying because I was sad, but there was a sense of pride too. Please everyone, go watch it. Both Sonam and Shabana are so great!

I guess actors really come into their own around their 10th-ish movie. Kangna/deepika has done tons of movies before they were recognized for their acting skills, although I don't think they are really that great. Queen/piku really ok movies. But Sonam has done very few movies and now with Neerja, she is really shining. Acting is subjective. Just coz you watched it and thought her performance meh doesn't mean all the critics and other audience phrasing her performance are exaggerating. So let's all not discount what Donam has done here. PV post

ok congrats to your sona for acting for the first time in her career but y r u downing kangana and deepika here and please stop taking dp and kangna name in the same line as if both are similar actors...kangna is way better than dp...it took dp to start acting in 5 years like it took sonam to act in 10 years..Kangna have been giving amazing performances right from her debut...And yes kangna have done more terrible movies than her rivals as well amidst amazing performances...pv post

I mean it's not the number of years that matter. Deepika acted in 12 movies before Cocktail (including Aishwarya) and Sonam in 12 before Neerja. Admittedly, Deepika's previous perfomances were better but I do like the movies Sonam chose in the early part of her career.

What part of the FAMILY LOVED Sonam Kapoor as their daughter do people fail to understand? She was able to BE Neerja according to the brothers, you know, the ones that actually know Neerja. It´s just ridiculous how much denial is going on here, lmao!

Haters & trolls will die even more soon.

Reviews time!

Number one. From Komal Nahta:

Sonam Kapoor, it seems, was born to play Neerja Bhanot. She looks every inch the airhostess she plays and she delivers an extraordinary performance. The way she conveys her poise and balance of mind in the face of adversity is indeed praiseworthy. For all those who felt, Sonam is a wooden actress and only all about looks, this film is her answer to them. Shabana Azmi is mind-blowing! She makes every single, repeat, every single scene in which she appears, memorable. She makes the audience cry buckets with a performance which may well go down as one of the best ever not just in her career or in Indian cinema but in world cinema. Every single award for the best character actress may well be Shabana's this year. Frankly, no amount of praise would be too much for Shabana Azmi in this film. Yogendra Tiku is another splendid actor who makes the character of Neerja's father memorable with an absolutely heartfelt performance. His expressions and his body language are to simply die for! A word here about the dialogue deliveries of Shabana Azmi and Yogendra Tiku when they converse with each other after learning about the hijack operation - their dialogue deliveries are exceptional. It is delightful to see them falter, murmur, mutter and even console each other, trying to put up a brave front while internally dying a hundred deaths.

Neerja is an inspiring well made film. Congrat sonam for ur spectacular performance. Besides pinkvilla almost all of the reviews praise sonam performance. Some of you are acting like crazy here on this post. You cant assume that your favorite actor can pull this character very well. DONT FORCE UR JELOUSLY ON SONAM. Sonam deserves the praise and is full on convincing for potraying the great hero Neerja. We are proud of you!!

I cried after the movie. I just couldn't stop myself. Watch it people. Sonam does a good job in this one.

sonam is a very average actress want this movie to work only for neerja she is a real hero n her story needed to be told being brave at such a young age is commendable......sonam went from a 2 to 4 on a scale of 10 in terms of acting

Good news is she is improving...and thats great !

Exactly . Her fans are so used to seeing such terrible acting from Sonam, even an average performance feels like revelation to them . They are acting like she is the new Tabu or Kangana

watch the movie. why have a bias? if she is good in the movie she is good.

Dont mention Tabu, she was horrible in Fitoor.Pc, dp and kangna are no where near Aishwarya, Madhrri, Priety, Rani

LOL...aishwarya,priety were never great actresses....they are average at best..Kangna is better actress than both of them and even kareena...

Oh please.. Priety, Aishwarya r anyday better actresses than today's actresses... DP can only dream about it...

Just because priety and aish are actresses from 90s donsnt automatically make them better than present actresses...its like saying heme malini is better actress than tabu just because they are from diff era ....I say it again Kangna is much better than prity, aishwarya, kareena

congratulations to ram madhvani. a perfect movie but slightly flawed lead performance is better than having a slightly flawed movie and a perfect lead performance.

DP fans are just jealous of others success. They will pull down any actress success. Deepika is finished best to accept it now.

Lol . 2 filmfares , critically and commercially acclaimed performances , a hollywood movie, huge fan following . And this nobody sits in front of his keyboard and makes predictions . Lol

LOL.

To be very honest. On one hand, I feel happy that sonam's acting has improved - this has to be her best so far, and many have been convinced by her acting this time. On the other hand I feel that indeed there are actresses in BW who could play Neeja better than Sonam, kalki, kangana or anushka for examples. I would not have said it if the film was not based on Neerja, a real life hero.. but since the movie is revolved around a lovely brave Neerja, I feel perhaps the lady deserved a better actress to portray her. I would still request everyone to watch this film to respect Neerja as a woman. I think actresses like Katrina Kaif has made our standards way lower. We think an actress can act if she emotes to some extent or speaks hindi fluently without blinking their eyes. I am still happy for Sonam's improvement. AND Bollyfanluver, will you please stay away from my comment? Before you jump at me 1) I am not hating on Sonam 2) I am just expressing my opinion through this comment, my intention is not to hurt you or your favorite Sonam in anyway 3) Good for you if think she is a great actress and has done full justice to Neerja, please keep that opinion to yourself.. I am not questioning your opinion and I don't think you should either :) Thanks!

I think there were a few scenes where Sonam was off (one where the kids tells her "i wanna go to my mom" and she says "me too"-- her expression and dialog were very monotone). But she's done a good job overall. Atleast she's getting better!

yup! my point exactly!

Sonam fans are fighting among themselves.Don't think they have the time to fight others today:)) It's LOLworthy. And there is nothing to hate. Sonam's getting the praise.

OH really? where? I am a Sonam fan I don't see fighting! LOL!

BollyFanLuver will be on fire this weekend:))

You bet Anon, you bet! Grab a seat, it´s going to be a joy ride haha

:D

And you should !! I remember how proud I was of RS after reading the BM reviews ! These are the moments we live for as fans ! I'm happy for Sonam and her fandom :)

Hahaha, thanks Anon. Veer really did us proud with his Bajirao. I will brag & say it´s all in the family hehe ;-)

Jokes aside, it´s a joy to feel this much vindicated when you are a struggling performer´s fan. Cheers to all of us haha!!

No Sonam fan cries when some other actress gets rave reviews but these people just can't digest her success. I mean they've not even seen the film yet and they're like 'dp would be better' etc .GROW UP guys. The whole world is praising the film and sonam and yet you people are stuck in negativity at least try to honour a national hero like Neerja. Her parents and family approved of Sonam so what's your problem? Show some respect. If you can't then please leave and wait for your XXX porno to release then comment on your fav's marvellous skills there. Thank you.
PV POST IT PLEASE!

Nice movie worth watching good performance by sonam

I am going to watch this movie later today with my family and now after reading majority of the reviews I am really looking forward to it. For the first time, I have to say after reading the majority of the reviews (it took me about 1 hour to go through so many of them) I agree with BollyFanLuver. This review is taking digs at Sonam even though majority of the reviews only have good things to say. Yes, there are a few that say she starts out dull in the beginning but they all agree that she picks up later. My view is that when you look at reviews you should get as many opinions as possible and then make a sound judgement (kind of like research more than is important). In this case where only 2 out 20 reviews have even the slightest negative inclination towards Sonam's portrayal of the character, it is probably due to their bias. SO there! I said it! Give the woman credit where it is due, it appears she worked he butt of in the movie don't take it away form her! Looking forward to it Sonam and GOOD JOB SONAM!!!!

I don't know why people are discouraging Sonam and her performance in this film. Critics did appreciate her act, by saying that she's finally getting into the acting groove. I mean, people always demean her and Katrina, but come on, her act in this film seems much better than whatever Katrina had to do in Fitoor. There were also some people who were demeaning Deepika's performance in Cocktail as faulty, even when she seemed to put in her best effort, but she grew more and more to where she is now.

The reviews for this movie and Sonam's performance have been superlative so far! I can't wait to watch it.

We honestly need more Deepika fans like you. Some of these anon really ruin it for the whole fandom.

Very happy for the team and Neerja Bhanot. Here's a story that deserved to be told. Kudos to the team and of course Sonam!

Honestly I knew she had it in her. She just needed a good role. Performed MUCH better than any DP movie ever.

Lets just stick to congratulating Sonam on her performance, shall we ?? Dont show your jealousy by dragging other actresses into this.

Oh please . One above average performance and suddenly she is as good as Deepika who has proved herself with consistent excellent performances for 3 years now . If Anushka,DP or Kangana did this film, it would be on a totally another level

Bringing up DP here too. Just shows how much she rules your mind. Lol

If Anushka,DP or Kangana had done this film you can imagine the level of perfection it would be .

I think Anushka and Kangana would overdo it. Anushka would bring more fierceness than required and Kangana would overdo the eccentricities. Deepika, Shraddha, Kalki, Sonakshi, Richa Chaddha etc would do a better job of a more realistic and natural performance (I don't think physical resemblance to Neerja should be the main criteria for selection).
Haven't seen the movie, so can't comment on Sonam's performance. I'll give her the benefit of doubt, even though her rude/catty behavior, spoilt brat image from the last few years doesn't really compel me to look forward to watching the movie.

umm what shraddha? lol she's worse than katrina! I've watched the film and in my mind sonam is the best choice for it. now i know what neerjas family meant when they said they see neerja in sonam. plus i mean they knew neerja, so who are we all to decide? but yes, i agree with your points on kangana/anushka.

The same.way Priyanka or kangana could have done a much much better job than deepika in pika or ramleela... There is always an actress.better.than.the other one but some roles are meant to be.. People who are neutral towards deepika and.Priyanka preferd Priyanka's.role over.deepika's in bm... Also deepika.was.not.the best actress in town when.she debut.. She improved with each passing films.. Sonam havent.done as much mpvie as deepika but if the.director is.good.she.does a decent job... Also kangana when started her career was only good in physco roles... Have ypu seen her acting.in rascals??? She improved after each movie...Anushka is good but not for subtle or silent type pf roles... Priyanka seems to be a better optiin but she from no angle lools like neerja and she wont look like a 23 yr old air hostess....
Anushka dp or.kangana was not.given the role coz.they done look like neerja banot from any angle.. Also if neerja's family has no objection then why should we care?? The main good thing abt sonam doing the movie is we didnt have to bare unnecessary publicity around the movie...

Although I agree with most of your statement, I disagree with your statement about Piku. I don't think Kangana or PC could've done that role any better. I haven't seen either of them do any role with the kind of restraint that character required. That is just my opinion but DP couldn't do a role like Jhilmil (which I also don't think Kangana could do) and neither PC or DP could do Rani (Queen). SO in my opinion all these actresses have their strengths and weaknesses and there is room of all of them as there are so many different types of personalities to portray (it's if the personality fits the person playing the character) on screen. I just want to see good cinema with good performances that's it!

This is so annoying. Why take the credit away from Sonam. Those actresses are not playing Neerja. You can't judge a performance until you see it. It's so silly when people give this argument not just for Sonam but for anyone else. It's pretty demeaning.

Rest your reaching arms, my dear.

Lolz at you haters , just have to bring up DP here too

Katrina would've been a better choice! she is great in emotional roles remember New York. Critic Subhash K. Jha said she "comes into her own as an actress of substance ... From the carefree effervescent campus girl to the anguished wife, Katrina makes the journey look plausible all the way" Plus she is beautiful like Neerja.

Hahaha.... U r funny!

PV please post! Why are people saying only Pinkvilla review found fault with Sonam - most of the critics did the same: Emirates: Casting Sonam Kapoor is rather unfortunate. She looks the part and is sincere, no doubt, but there are actors who could’ve lived the part far more convincingly. There are moments, many actually, where Sonam misses the beat, reducing Neerja’s heroism into a lesson in bad acting. And, that’s a shame. Sonam's flaws are smoothened out by the class act of the four terrorists, who despite being new on the acting ground, are menacingly superlative. There’s also Shabana Azmi, who effortlessly moves us with her stellar act. It’s during the final moments when she pays tribute to her darling Neerja that we understand Shabana’s true power. Unfortunately, that’s something Sonam fails to bring on-screen. Masala: I bawled my eyes out both at the tearjerker of a climax and see Sonam struggle with the character. I don't want to be mean, but she is indeed the weakest link of Neerja. Indian Express: Sonam Kapoor fumbles in a couple of initial phases, where we find a blankness rather than terror on her face. TheHindu: Even Sonam as Neerja felt more Sonam to me than Neerja.. Koimoi: Sonam Kapoor does a much better job than what I expected her to do. In her pre-hijack scenes, she is just like what she has been in any other film.
Even the ones who have praised her, it's more like - because it's Sonam - just that this is good enough "for Sonam".

LOL, maybe 5 negative reviews in a SEA of good reviews. By critics who are very obviously biased & cannot do their job properly for at least 4 of them. Yes, i read them all. & only a hater will try to base on that to discredit the driving force of the movie: Sonam Kapoor´s performance. & to conclude that it was good enough for Sonam. LOL. You really think those reviewers are afraid to bash her? For a character this important? What about the public love, hmm? You are just embarrassing yourself at this point. Keep on hugging your lie it will keep you warm.

I will just leave what Filmfaare had to say here for you:

Biopics good or bad are usually driven by the performance of the lead actor, portraying the person on whose life the story is based. Sonam Kapoor is playing Neerja and the very fact that she doesn't have the perceived image of a great actress, works in her favour. With each passing scene the actress surprises you with her restraint and control. Her performance is convincing and it supplements the story telling with great effect. When the terrorist makes her sing at gun point you feel for a moment, that it could’ve been done better, but then succeeding scenes like when she breaks down in front of her parents and the scene when she's dying are proof of a spectacular performance.

Note they say perceived image. Meaning it is false & not accurate. & you are clearly one of those suffering for that false perception of Sonam Kapoor´s talents. She will get nominations for this, although she doesn´t care too much about that. She might even win a few awards if her movie does well (touch wood). & you will deal

Don't feel like watching the movie just because of Sonam. Wish they would have casted Anushka or Deepika!

no doubt that it is an excellent movie and she might have done a good job and can be best of her till...i like her, but i think any average and good actor also could have pull it good only(i felt same for fashion). the screen play is too too strong and thats complements her acting... if screenplay was bad, it would have been her not so good also...while watching i got so emotional... sonam should work on her voice the way she drag and speak " dharwaaaazaaa bandhhhh karoooo"...but good job sonam and way way way better than KAT anyday...

Please release it in Pakistan I'm dying to watch this movie. Neerja is my hero and Sonam is my favourite. Please guys release it here

Okay ..one above average performance and every1 going gaga.

Sonam fans(*FAN) need to back off!! Let this movie be about Neerja & Sonam is being appreciated though we all know her limitations. Let this movie rise above your favorite. All the *Slap to haters* mantra is just throwing off people from watching the real hero Neerja! It takes a lot of courage on the family's part to share a painful chapter of their life. They are reliving a very difficult time again with this movie. Let's respect that please!!

Completely agree with what you have to say as a Sonam fan myself, but the same goes for the haters. It's really disrespectful and demeaning to Neerja and her family when all these haters are just making this another Bollywood drama.

Just watched it! it was really good film. I just wanted to say I cant believe how much Bollywood ppl over-praise on twitter! its a joke! The film was good and Sonams performance was decent, but its no where near award worthy like ppl r saying on twitter. She was "good" an "improvement" id say but don't believe the hype on twitter. Shabana Azmi was fantastic! overall, worth a watch!

Heyy i didnt even realise when this movie released. There was no promotion at all compared to fitoor which released last week and is already out of theatres. . Omgee katrina got on our nerves with her cheap strategies. good to see Neerja getting good buzz. Way to go

Nice to see women oriented films being made and well liked by audience and critics. Kahaani, Queen, Piku, NH10, Mary Kom, Neerja. Waiting for Jai Gangajal also. Wow we have some good actreses! Love you Sonam, Kangana, Deepika, PC, Anushka, Vidya. #GirlPower

No one is waiting for your Jai Gangajal LOL stop publicising your fav everywhere even where she has no link. This post is for Sonam and more importantly Neerja.

All good reviews from anupama chopra and raja sen and even krk. Lol!! Thats a surprise. Will deffo watch it weekend.

Gr8 wen a film widout gimmicky promotions turns out to be good.

With this Sonam enters the league of actresses that can ACT. Bravo!

sonam was the weakest link in the movie. the story, neerja and the director are the true heroes. don't give sonam the credit they deserve. had another talented actress done this movie it would have been more worth it.

So only Bombay Velvet is a good film in last few years .

Sonam, I'm glad you proved me wrong. Understand the critics and learn how to improve from here on.

WOW amazing review!!! So excited to watch. Go Sonam, I knew you could do it!!!

"She might not be the best choice for a film like Neerja, but she will still make you root for her with her honesty and vulnerability. She bares her soul in this performance which any day, trumps over finesse."

Hateful & biased reviewer. Who made you acritic even? Sonam Kapoor is not the best choice to play Neerja Bhanot? Pease pray tell us who you think could carry a movie like this on her shoulders like Sonam did & get people to be so emotional?
Incompetence speaking at its finest. Is it so important to play to the bandwagon?!?!?!

You think you know better thant the family & her brothers who said themselves that Sonam portrayed their sister more than well? Or a mother who could see her daughter in her? You really out to give your resignation, you are not fit to review movies!

Let's just ignore those biased negative reviews. All the credible critics , be it Raja Sen , Anupama Chopra, Taran Ardash, Shubra Gupta and many others have praised Sonam performance to the sky. It's better to relate those ones , because it seems like PV is not willing to acknowledge Sonam acclaimed performance .

yaa, you are right. I might even post all of those just to be petty if i am in the mood, lol :D

Verdict: It is inspiring, fearless and beautiful. A must watch for everyone - Neerja review by behindwoods . It is very rare to see so much praise for a bollywood film in behindwoods .

OMG, they reviewed Neerja? :O

I have to catch their review!

Even Hwood movie critics were hitting the producers on twitter because they want to know where they can go & watch Neerja to do a press review. This is huge

Sonam did well, but I went for the real Neerja. I hope people watch it. Sonam keep experimenting in this area. She has improved though.

I love Sonam and I AM happy for her but Neerja Bhanot deserved a better actress to play her! Sorry but this is the cold hard truth. Most reviewers are praising Shabana when she's not the central character. Kangana would have made truly captured Neerja's essence but alas hope it does well.

Even the ones who have praised her, it's more like - because it's Sonam,, this is good enough for Sonam.

You are full of it. Most reviewers you said? LIES & More LIES. Yall always try it the most here. I hope your tears are ready when it gets her awards all accross the country!

Well done Sonam. The movie is getting rave reviews all over.

Many people I know are going to watch the film for the real brave heart Neerja and not for Sonam. I hope Sonam and Anil don't live in their la la land thinking that people are flocking to theaters to watch Sonam.

While that is true we should also give Sonam credit for managing to pull off a very difficult and important role brilliantly. A large part of the audience may not have gone in to see her like me but many will leave with a new appreciation for her

Someone other than Sonam could have played the role better.

hi deepika

Sonam was the weakest link of the film. Other than that it was good.

Sonam was the only let down of this film, wish they had got someone else to portray the heroic Neerja.

i googled the review for Neerja movie and i have not seen in any reviews saying sonam is the weak link and everyone praised sonam including KRK...im damn sure u have not seen the movie simply spreading false things.u r proving ua hateness is more towards sonam rather than ua respect towards Neerja bhanot...this story need to be told and neerja movie ppl done..Everyone performance in the movie is mind blowing..hater like you dont undertand it..

From all the reviews i have read the film is being compared to Talvar and praises for Sonam and especially Shabana. The film has received 4 stars from nearly everywhere. This is the only review i have read where there is something negative to say about Sonam. Each to their own, will still watch it.

You can guess why. We all know how Pinkvilla loves to manipulate things when it comes to Sonam Kapoor for the benefit of people i will not need to name. This time they can´t spin it another way, yet they still try.

& the way the scipt & everything is paced deserve higher points than what they are giving. Yet...

I am huge Sonam fan. Not exactly her warrior like you are on PV. So first of all cheers to our darling proving her detractors wrong. She is pitch-perfect in the role.
But we all know who you are pointing to here. It amazes me that even in such proud moment for Sonam you find a way to be petty about Deepika. Why make it about her?? Frankly I don't get the reason for this war between Sonam and Deepika's fandom. It's just silly. It's so laughable when people think that most major outlets are this Deepika's' PR mouth-piece. She is a good actress, so is Sonam. But I guess there's no point arguing with you about Deepika. I have seen before you just lose all your rationality when it comes to her. Anyway, kudos to Sonam and cheers for many more such fabulous performances in the future.

Where did you read that name in my comment? & why do you, a pretended Sonam fan hurt about my opinion on her shenanigans anyway? For me seems like you are a PR mata stan in disguise & since you guys are OBSESSED with her, you have to think everything is about her. Do you need her name mentioned so much on everything that is about Sonam Kapoor?

You have nerves to call me irrational when her PR is one of the reasons why Sonam, that you pretend to love, has to fight the non-actor tag? Do you see me in her in her PR posts even, unless they are about another actress i like? What gives you the right to call me names? You are obsessed & innacurate on top of that.

If you don´t get off my back & go troll somewhere else.

This is what is so annoying about you. You can't even take a compliment. Any regular reader on PV knows who are you talking about when you throw a shade. As far as being a Sonam fan is concerned, I don't need your certificate. It's irrational self-appointed guardians of her fandom like you who give Sonam's fandom a bad name. It appears you are more butt-hurt by Deepika than Sonam is. Sonam is secure about her own body of work to praise Deepika's performance when it's good. You are miserable when it comes to Deepika and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it. You cannot even engage in a conversation in a polite manner. And I can comment wherever I want. Don't read if you can't handle it.

There's no point in trying to do what you are doing. You're only poking the bear here. Lol! :)

All the very best to Neerja and everyone associated with film n with real life to her..

soooo happy for sonam... she proveed herself,...way to go sonam

Go sonam

Pinkvilla u know it. You hate her but you are a secret admire too. You just cant ignore my sona

Good for you Sonam , let the acting talk for itself.

Very happy for sonam and her performance.

Very happy for sonam and her performance.

Nonsense this movie deserves much more than 66% on the scale

Very Good..66%..Good Luck Neerja/Sonam.

Woot woot Sonam!!! Never too late to prove yourself. I hope you only climb towards success now as an actress. There is still room for improvement for her, but at least now we know Sonam has the ability to act.

There is room for improvement for everyone, not just Sonam Kapoor. & Sonam proved herself as a drama actress already a long time ago with Delhi 6 & Raanjhana. All the respectable reviewers in the industry gave her a double thumbs, her performance in Neerja made Anupama Chopra cry & even KRK thanked her for doing this movie. & i could go on

This is more than the ability to act. It is a fine show of acting!

Blind and overrated fan of sonam kapoor spoted

I am a Sonam fan and I so agree with you.

After a decade in the industry even you and I would act, specially when film kids get offers after several flops and non acting. Of course the only exception is Katrina who hasn't learnt to act after 12 yrs of being in films. Anyway, this film is appreciated more for the actual brave heart Neerja than for Sonam. I'm sure Priyanka, Kalki, Deepika, Kangana, Vidya, Tabu would have done a much much better job in this role than Sonam. It is sad that these film kids get so many good offers for decades together while outsiders hardly get any chance after one or two flops

Thats true. Star kids get way more chances in Bollywood than outsiders. No denying there. But then again we can't generalize all star kids because hrithik, aamir and kareena are starkids too. Its rare for starkids to have that talent because sadly they choose the easier ways in life

Not all star kids get a lot of chances. Tusshar, Zayed, Bobby Deol (talent), Fardeen, Esha .... I think it is all about talent, but not the presence of stellar parents

Priyanka, Kalki, Deepika, Kangana, Vidya, Tabu would have done better, but who among them similar to the real Neerja? A young girl, a little older than 20 years. Taboo? But she does not look on 20. Vidya? It is also not suitable. Priyanka is possible, but Priyanka for a long time in Hollywood. Kalki? I love Kalki, but she did not Neerja Deepika apparently does not fit, can be Kangana, with a new hairdo and cute baby face, it could be Neerja, but Sonam still ideal candidate

Anushka was a perfect candidate for the role though.
