Mirzya Movie Review: Harsh-Saiyami lack passion in this picturesque film

“It is beautiful, it is endless, it is full and yet seems empty. It hurts us.” wrote Jackson Pearce in his 2012 book Fathomless. When I watched Mirzya, these words came screaming back to me because they describe my sentiments so aptly. There I have said it. That’s what Mirzya is – poetry that is hollow, a painting so beautiful that it's missing soul becomes even more stark. The legend of the star-crossed lovers – Sahiba and Mirza finds a mirror in today’s romance – between Aadil and Suchitra. Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and his co-writer Gulzar Sa’ab stay loyal to the folklore, throwing few surprises our way. And that’s precisely where the film falters. It is unnerving to sit through a retelling of a story that has nothing new to say, no new perspective to bring forth. By the last scene, it feels like a star-kid launchpad (a term Mehra so despises) that doesn’t attempt to be a good film.

The real hero of the film is indeed, the cinematographer Pawel Dyllus. He spins an intricate canvas; shot lucidly with warm bright colors, oozing the energy of the story, reflecting the moodiness of the plot and the philosophy of the story. To blend it all must’ve been a tough feat, but the gorgeous shots are effortless.

Frankly, I had hoped to find out the answer to the eternal question – why Sahiba broke Mirza’s arrows. At least, a new perspective to the story of eternal love. For centuries readers have wondered if her betrayal was justified. But Mehra has no answers to it either. Probably he and Gulzar Sa’ab don’t try to seek it either. They busy themselves finding reflections of Mirza and Sahiba. Their modern day man is a stable day with a history of juvenile delinquency. The woman in love is soon-to-be-princess, whose father has promised her off to the royal family. But over horse riding, they fall in love. The childhood crush blooms into a fairytale that begins with a ‘once upon a time...’ but doesn’t end with a happily-ever-after.

To their credit, the actors are quite good. Yes, they are beginners and hence, the expectations are moderate. And they don’t disappoint but for passionate romance, their chemistry falls short by a couple of ounces. Mehra’s broadway style music soaked with Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s languid music compensate to a great extent but it never hits hard enough. The aesthetics are the show-stealers, while performances take a backseat. Daler Mehndi’s voice catapults you into the trance. But the music-heavy, dance-heavy film plays out like a ballad lacks intensity. The flaming passion has lower zing than the music. Since this story is that well known, the element of surprise is missing. It plays out predictably failing to sweep you off your feet.

Talk about forbidden love and its conflict never makes it to the film. There is a lack of drama and urgency, for which the blame lies with the director. He orchestrates the film on a grand scale but finds little material to substantiate it. However, Anuj Choudhary is a find, who’ll create a better impact than both Harsh and Saiyami. Harsh has the intensity and raw appeal of a novice and he truly needs to be in stabler hands for better grooming. He lives up to his pedigree, with this lyrical choice.

Even at 2 hours and a couple of minutes, Mirzya is dreadfully tiresome to watch. It is arresting visually but too dull to hold your attention.

Dont worry. He will be the Best debut this this year. CONFIRMED (LOL)

The movie is leaked on YouTube, WTF where are the producers. This not fair

I think something went wrong with the movie post production and marketing. The PR was not fit for someone like HW Kapoor, son of a superstar. They didn't create as much hype as Tiger Shroff's debut or even Arjun Kapoor's debut. Suraj Pancholi had more hype than this.Rakesh Mehra was absent all through the promotions and Anil Kapoor and Sonum were managing the promos. I expect the film must be better than most that we come across but I am sure it wasn't marketed well enough.

Good movie, Anil Kapoor kid acting is far more better than his sister, natural, no over acting like ranveer and arjun, looks promising

Surprisingly the boy can act, nice love story

the way harshvardhan was talking about the preparation of his role, i was expecting some daniel day lewis level acting. but in reality he's just an overhyped entitled star kid. i like this saiyami girl though - through the promos, i can tell that she's not the most refined actress yet but she seems more promising than other newcomers this year like disha and pooja (please she seemed really nice and cheerful during the promotions).

Saw the movie, read the comments, look as for Harsh Kapoor if someone is able to express a range of emotions with minimal amount of dialogue and lines then he is a good actor in my book

The movie should have been about the current day not the past. Harshvardhan and Saiyami were impressive, good acting. Saiyami light eyes reminded me of Aishwarya when she was young

the father character was over dramatic, the leads were good, the other village girl was good too, good movie

Watched the movie...i have so much to say, but i will make it short, LOL. In the name of love, LOVE AND MORE LOVE, I liked it, but the ending why Rakeysh Mehra, why, tears . Its a different kind of movie for sure, the main attractions for me in this movie aside from the great editing and spectacular cinematography is Harshvrdhan Kapoor and Saiyami Kher. Every time they appeared on screen i wished that their moments was a bit longer. Harshvrdhan what can i say you won my heart, so much honesty in your performance and innocence in your eyes, with every movement and gesture you delivered, you shine till the last scene, an outstanding performance, intense. Saiyami is so beautiful, strong screen presence, great performance, your eyes. The movie showcased the beauty of Rajasthan with stunning visuals, just wish the ending was different, as soon as i saw that arrow killing Mirzya, i was like OH no its done for Monish. Mehra A VERY good movie, NICE

The scene when they fall on the sand and Harsh hears the horses and then he comes passing saiyami and then you see them together on the horse riding in the open desert, what a scene, what great camerawork. Harsh and Saiyami outstanding performance

Harsh Humble Pie! :)

If you can't even shine in Rakesh Mehra movie, that tells what kinda actor you are. This movie looked crass since its trailer.

By the way does Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) know that Art Malik is a Pakistani born British actor? I don't think so otherwise this film would have faced the same problem as Ae dil hai mushkil

Honestly just watched film.film was dragged and slow .suyami couldn't appeal to me neither with beauty n style nor with acting.
only good thing was harswardhan in movie.he was doing better acting compare to other star kids in their first movie.

Why does Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra cast Art Malik? His anglicized accent is so irritating. Even in Bhag Milkha Bhag he was speaking Punjabi with an anglicized accent, and that too when he was playing a villager. FLOP film from the word go.

Raykesh needs aamir khan just as much as ashutosh, both have streaks of brilliance that somehow need focus and direction only the perfectionist AK provides. Just a hunch!

Harsh better get a reality check! He thinks cos he's studied in US and owns a few blue ray dvd's, he's some thespian! His next Bhavesh Joshi seems like a similar flop which wont appeal to the masses either! Better sign some decent movies young man or you'll have to turn to being a fashionista too to sustain your career!

rakesh mehra takes these sons and nieces so that he can be a part of their clique.i wish he realises as an outside talent that he should give outsiders a. chance as well, aamir, farhan ,sonam....sad mehra...

Rakeysh belongs to the industry....he's the son of director Om Prakash Mehra....who has made most of his films with Amitabh. He himself is a star-director kid....

The cinematography does stand out. The movie looks beautiful, but I am tired of Romeo-Juliet type stories. Harsh looks exactly like Sonam/Ranveer. The reviewer didn't comment on Saiyami's acting potential ?

haha

Hope this brings Harsh down from that high horse. He was already thinking himself better than the indian audience and look what happened. Don't respect the audience, they'll show you your place. The only start-kid in recent times that has genuine respect for the audience and doesn't think too highly of himself is Varun

Harshu, Remember Tushar, Mimo, Luv Sinha? You still can't comprehend?

They always do this. The industry hypes up star kids making it look like they are the best actors on the block and then the film comes out and then just disappointment.

who really cares if this is going to be a hit or flop? He is still gonna get plenty of chances until he gives a hit like his sister.

I haven't seen the film. But could it be the case that in order to show the same romance blooming in two different Universes the makers had to sacrifice some aspects of the story telling? There could be a 4 hour version of the movie somewhere which might give us more depth about the star

Star son, ample opportunity, ample training, amples access and above all ample attitude. Mediocre acting. Boo

Having daddy has gotton him more film even before this relised.

Harshs is full of himself buy can't act to save his life

At least he can act
