Badrinath Ki Dulhania Movie Review: Missing a Varun Dhawan show is blasphemy

Badrinath Ki Dulhania Movie Review: Do you watch it? Yes. For the point it makes. For Alia, who sparkles as a no nonsense, all business beauty. For Varun, who makes all the effort come together in the end.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania was never a film of triumph. It was a rehashed idea, done well but not something worth making a big deal of. But the film catapulted Shashank Khaitan into a league of A-line filmmakers. The success was emboldening as the filmmaker has ended up making a fine film this time. Not a novel idea, could be passed off as run on the mill but nevertheless a film that can't be missed. Varun returns as Badrinath Bansal, irreversible, irreverent and every shade of wrong. He is a male chauvinist and his heroine is a firecracker who feels claustrophobic to be a part of the world that labels women like her. Badri is a male chauvinist because his upbringing has never taught him better. He is raised by men who treat women poorly and have never seen women who can hold their ground till Vaidehi comes his way. Love is too little and shallow for her. Having had her heart broken in the past, she knows the value of freedom. The passport to that is her career. The inspired plot allows her to be a woman who is driven as opposed to a man who doesn't see the point of his career. Khaitan this time walks a tightrope, presenting a pertinent issue with the right heart and deftness, never overstepping the mark to make a lecture of it. Usually the potent tool of humor to his advantage, he whips up a tale of emotional grit. Of course, that's the most we expect from a regular song and dance dharma film but at least this one is devised with the right attitude and motive.
Taking on the issues of dowry prevalent in many states in India, there is a wedding and a romance at the heart of it. Varun's maturity sets the screen ablaze. He is rightly cocky, wicked, affable but his male ego is right next to him. So what happens when he has his heart set on a woman who knows her own. He is zapped and torn. There is a brilliant, almost heartbreaking scene of him breaking down on a beach which is stirring. Who said Hindi films are incapable of making fun films which make sense? Khaitan goes on to prove there is a lot to experiment in the genre. He sets his wits in place to whip up a fantastic female character who matches the might of her man with her smarts. She reasons and doesn't fear his rage, dousing it with her own reasons. The beauty of this film lies in its writing and cast.
Alia plays an extension of herself in 2 States, re-creating her dowry scene with finesse. But eventually, it is Varun who has the challenging work to do, be an endearing douche. Feminists can loathe him but believe me, he is winsome in his act. Not saccharine sweet but adequately funny and heartwarming. There is a reason he is the country's most bankable star. His choice of roles bears testimony to it but this one is another feather on his cap.
The dialogues are spunky, Khaitan keeps the dialoguebaazi fast and frequent, lacing the colloquial words with modern thinking. In this department, Alia gets the better deal. She is a hoot, insulting her suitor but never overstepping the mark. In the second half, the film loses its tempo, caused by an absurd change of heart in Badrinath. Don't ask how! We aren't told any of it. Just believe it, that's a dharma film bro. There is a flaky groom choosing scene which was an epic misfit in a real set up. The gyaan a little later in the day eventually, probably because Khaitan didn't know know how better to wrap up his masterpiece.
There are several humorous moments between the sturdy supporting actors which salvage the odds. Varun gets a standout one when he buyskamino (kimono) for Alia. Do you watch it? Yes. For the point it makes. For Alia, who sparkles as a no nonsense, all business beauty. For Varun, who makes all the effort come together in the end. Let's not underrate the boy. He can do it all, be gritty, act fabulously, be his character and all of it while dancing like a star. May be there is already a superstar here.
We rate the film a 65% on the Pinkvilla Movie Meter.
A 100% on the Pinkvilla Movie Meter is equivalent to 5 Stars on the 5-Star Rating Scale

It would've made more sense, and been less regressive, had the character of Badri been a much married guy, with grown-up children, who takes a fancy to Vaidehi to add some excitement to his growing (old) harem, and stalks her in order to abate boredom from his gone-stale-already multiple wives. Sheesh. Hope they make a sequel soon hovering around one such progressive plot.

Humpty Sharma was actually cute and refreshing. This one is such a disaster. Guy stalks girl, kidnaps her, and she... wait for it... falls for him. WOW! Even Rangoon was better than this regressive crap.

Why are they talking in a Bihari accent in a movie that's set in Madhya Pradesh. Do these directors not know how to do basic research

Never planned on watching this for many reasons and now that I know it's regressive from WOM, I am happy I chose to stay away. Sad that people will make crap movie star like this a hit. I guess this is why BW keeps dishing this stuff out.

Alias not particularly good looking, accept it and move on. She's a good actress. What do her looks have to do about the movie being appealing. I thought the movie was ok, overrated to say the least.

Feminism wasn't portrayed properly in this film. They should have steered away from sending a message. I could not empathize with Alia's character as she did use Badrinath to her advantage. Also was offended by the male rape joke. That's a serious problem in the world. They should have kept it as a masala film. How this movie is doing better at the box office than dawat ishq is beyond me

Not bad, but not amazing. The first part was better. Something about the execution of this one fell short. Still worth a watch though. 3/5.

NOT skipping a Varun Dhawan film is blasphemy!!!!

ive watched it and I love it

Varun and alia gives me an impression of Govinda and Karishma. This movie reminds me of Raja Babu.

Kya mast joke maara, mazzaa agaya,!

The movie is really amazing and I have come back here commenting because I was not going to watch it because of comments here but then I changed my mind and I am really happy that I did. Because the movie was indeed heart touching and entertaining. Thanks Varun, alia and others behind the movie.

Ok Karan. Thanks for letting us know.

movie rocks..full on dhamaka ..from cutie alia n varun..kya jodi hai..maza ata indono ko dekhkar..thumbz up:)

u really summed up alia bueaty in a perfect manner.dat exactly wat i feel wen i see her .a pretty girl wid bueatiful dimples n gorgeous hearwarming smile.a girl who is real nd honest.isnt diplomatic n calculative..a nomkup bueaty fresh face...youthful energetic nd entertaining .she is different dan other actresses.nowonder people love her..nd d thing dat people are obsessed wid bueaty factor in a heroine ki dey cant thnk above it.dey dun see d talent in d actres.just how bueatiful she shallow!

Ranveer fans are so jealous of Varun's success!!!!

Alia began her career very young and unfortunately her young face in SOTY is what is stuck in most ppl head just the case with Karishma. Alia has beauty of her own kind, natural and needing less make up like Anushka, Kareena and Karishma back in the days. Alia has a great skin and she looks very young and pretty and cute with those dimples, she has a sharp nose and her face has shaped up nicely now. She has an appeal and charisma, I find myself staring at her being a girl and someone who did not like her previously. I do not know wht it is abt her, her features are not exceptionally good but they are pretty and she is overall pretty.

I agree with the above.Alia is an average looker. But she is pretty. And this works in her favour. People cocentrate more on her performance. And for someone who is 23 only, she is a good performer.

2nd best opening after raees. And a good word of mouth. The movie might as well reach 100 crores. Calm down varun haters, he has arrived.

When I watched SOTY, all I could see was Sid and his looks and his mature sexy demeanor and it seems like he's that way in real too. Alia had a chubby face and was unattractive and Varun had a bit chubby face too. I watched them in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya and WOW!!!! Alia had lost chub and actually started looking pretty and Varun lost the chub too and man did they put a show on!?. I watched her in 2 States & Kapoor and Sons and just loved watching her natural reactions and cute face. I've been waiting for this movie since the Title track came out because damn did they have some moves and expressions!?. I absolutely love these two together, they have a great natural chemistry and are both cute young looking and a bit childish. I love Sid, he's like the Arjun Rampal of BW right now in the sense that Arjun was an overnights sensation due to his drop dead looks. Arjun is a great actor too and emotes extremely well but that's a different story, Sid is not that good of an actor but I can watch him all day long and his tall wide physique on that sexy face is too good. Back to these two, I love them!!!! I love them!!!!

body shamer.. they weren't chubby

The movie is super regressive, the hero stalks the girl, kidnaps her in the trunk of his car, harasses her until she agrees to marry him. KJo is so backwards, he doesn't understand women.

alia is vry bueatifullnd obviously peple who dun like her wil say her avg sha is adooooorable!

watch fr varun alia..dey seem like a real life couple..nvr sseems :)dey are actng..nd alia varun are too gud

alia is beautiful and cute!

alia is hardly a just made me laugh..she is so fine looking has lot of karisma..she has innocent cute gorgeous dimple n perfect smile..i knw its hard fr few jealous grls to digest it..get a hajmola plz:)

The public reviews say VD copied Govinda, the plot is similar to Raja Babu, maybe new generation will like it as they have not watched Govinda, but I will surely pass on this movie, I am sure it is overrated

It's an awesome movie but of course jealous people here won't agree

PV movie reviews are very odd. This movie is complete rehashed rubbish.

If you are over 18 give this a miss.... Alia disappoints , just another character from her 2 states and humptey while Varun is not bad, one time watch about it.

A man stalks after a woman who is not interested in him at all. We are supposed to think this is a romance story! WTH is wrong with Karan Johar and Dharma Production. I was repulsed and bored with this film. AVOID!

Wow, are there only two actors in the whole film? Nobody else praiseworthy? Or is it just these two stranded on a desearted island? Start respecting the supporting cast please or do you want the academy to remember them when they are all gone like om puri sahab? Growup pinksvilla

KJo told them what to write.

Sid fans can take a chill pill. The movie is already a hit with a 13 crore opening and extremely positive reviews. Please target next movie of Varun and keep posting flop, boring comments under his posts.

not sid, ranveer "outsider" fans lol.

this review seems like the first half was good and the second half was bad...but badrinath being a dharma film is not exactly an excuse for nonsensical plots and sorry it is no blasphemy to skip a varun dhawan film LOL.. alia and varun really match as an onscreen couple tho. goodluck to them.

Boycott? KJo is an evil guy first his pakistan fawad comments then his going back on that then the kangana leave comments.. will wait for this to be on Einthusan ;)

Irony is that the people writing negative haven't even seen the movie. According to you, pinkvilla team or other reviewers who have liked the movie are below 18. Why can't people appreciate the good.

The best thing about movie was varun. He has earned a fan in me. Great going. But sadly pv won't release positive comments.

Varun copies four five actors and their acting style. He isn't original. Alia is good actor but lacks in looks department. This movie is a mash up of many movies. Kids under 18 who have not seen any movie in their lifetime might like it.

This comment section is filled with jealousy and hatred of some petty people. It's really sad.

Alia tries to be intelligent in the film which is completely opposite to her real life :D

Alia has screen presence and is a wonderful actress..which makes her beautiful. Why are people so obsessed with looks? She's adorable and is charming

Same story with a tadka of fake feminism. Nothing else!

these kind of rubbish movies should not even be a hit

Watch it for the powerful message that it delivers. Varun has become a really nice actor.

Alia is hardly a beauty. Why does the review call her a beauty??

Beauty lies in the eyes of the viewer. Stop slamming Alia over petite things like this.

Whatever Varun and Alia do, however good movie they make they will only get hate in the comments section.

So much praise for Varun.Wow.

ok i wil watch d movie fr d lead pairs:)

There is nothing new in the movie. Same BS in a new bottle. sad that People still watch such movies and make them a hit.

varun alia pair is never gona flop..its hit written all over..dey have d right chem not only on screen bt off screen too..dey hv huge fan following..i knew dis frm vry strt:)
