Plot

A femme fatale, her two offspring, and a tale of remains in a Bihari household form the outline of Suresh Triveni’s OTT directorial, Maa Behen. The comedy-thriller is headlined by three women: Madhuri Dixit (Rekha), Triptii Dimri (Jaya), and Dharna Durga (Sushma). (And yes, even I am thinking about that infamous detergent commercial—you’ll find your Hema here, too!)

The mother and daughters must bury the misdeed without the neighbors getting a whiff of it. Whether they succeed in executing this strategy, get caught, or encounter a massive plot twist forms the crux of Maa Behen, streaming on Netflix starting June 4, 2026.

What Works

Suresh Triveni’s direction is subtle rather than in-your-face, forcing you to dive deep into even the minutest shots. On the 70mm screen, Bihar has traditionally been shown in a very dull color palette; contrary to that trope, Maa Behen is quite colorful. The casting perfectly justifies the characters in this unique style of storytelling, and there are several underlying messages left for the viewers to comprehend.

What Doesn’t

The pace of the film is painfully slow at first. Interest levels only pick up in the second half before the narrative finally commands your undivided attention. The screenplay, too, gets a tad scattered in places. Furthermore, the songs are forgettable, and the background score fails to act as a strong supporting character—something that should have been a core strength of a comedy-thriller. Ultimately, the flavor of the genre feels a bit too mild rather than delivering a power-packed dose.

Performances

Madhuri Dixit plays Rekha, a single mother of two daughters maneuvering through the lecherous lens of society. This marks her first time trying her hand at a Bihari character, and she handles it with grace.

Triptii Dimri is highly believable as the Bihari girl, Jaya. She catches the nuances effortlessly and completely soaks herself in the character.

Dharna Durga, as Sushma, is the absolute heart of Maa Behen and proves she is here to stay.

Arunoday Singh, as Sub-Inspector Maheshwari, is thoroughly affable.

Ravi Kishan, as usual, excels in his role as Gupta ji.

Geetanjali Kulkarni, as Mrs. Gupta ji, is a delightful surprise.

Final Verdict

It’s a decent, one-time watch for a lazy Sunday.
