Seo Ye Ji, Lee Hi, CL & more; Celebrating the empowering women of the Korean entertainment industry
Wishing everyone a very Happy Women's Day! International Women's Day is celebrated on 8 March around the world. It is a focal point in the movement for women's rights. But honestly, we don't need a singular day to highlight how amazing women really are! “There is no limit to what we, as women, can accomplish.” – Michelle Obama, Former First Lady of the United States, was quoted saying and honestly, there cannot be a statement truer than this. Women are inspiring, trailblazers and achievers in every sense, especially women in the field of performing arts and glamour industry.
From objectification, scathing remarks about personal lives to having to prove themselves in a man's world, being their own, flawed real selves, it isn't easy to be a woman, especially in this glamour world. On the occasion of Women's Day, we highlight five women who have changed the ways of the Korean industry and our collective outlook towards 'Korean Entertainment'.
1. Seo Ye Ji
Undoubtedly the best actress of last year, Seo Ye Ji stunned critics and fans alike with a sensitive and winning performance as Go Moon Young, a successful children's book author, who specialises in writing macabre stories that don't have a traditional fairytale ending, yet in her real life, she is seeking familial bond and a romantic relationship, after suffering from years of abuse and abandonment in the hands of loved ones. Ye Ji's performance earned her many accolades, including the coveted 'Best Artist Award' at Asia awards.
2. Lee Hi
A talented and rising solo artist, she is currently signed with Jay Park's AOMG Entertainment. Known for her stunning voice, she has worked across many mediums. Her most notable works include her album Seoulite and First Love. She has also provided the OSTs for popular Korean dramas like Record Of The Youth and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo.
Lee Chae Rin or CL was born in Seoul but raised in France and Japan. A skilled rapper and singer-songwriter, her unconventional childhood has made her tough, badass and no-nonsense. She debuted with 2NE1 at the age of 15, which went on to become one of South Korea's most popular and best-selling girl groups worldwide. She also became the first Korean female solo artist to place onto the Billboard Hot 100 and the third Korean act to do so overall.
Lee Ji Eun aka IU needs no introduction. Her divine vocals and angelic beauty, make her a household name with K-fans across the world. The success of her song Good Day established IU as a formidable force on the music charts and earned her the title of 'Nation's Little Star'.
