Devara: Jr NTR starrer’s DOP breaks silence on trolls against him, says ‘Background guys should not look overpowering’

Devara: Part 1, starring Jr NTR in the lead role, was released in 2024 and was directed by Koratala Siva. Upon its release, the film received criticism, with some viewers trolling cinematographer Rathnavelu. Now, the filmmaker has reacted to the backlash.
Devara: DOP breaks the silence about trolls against him over Jr NTR starrer
Speaking with M9 News, DOP Rathnavelu highlighted how he had advised the makers against including certain elements that could hinder Jr NTR's visual presentation on screen.
The filmmaker said, “If we have to show Jr NTR and Ram Charan as tall, the background guys shouldn't look overpowering. In Devara, I told them not to put tall guys around NTR. In such cases, the cameraman is helpless. At least the duration of wide shots shouldn't be too long.”
The cinematographer further explained that every hero requires a different visual approach. According to him, wide frames and top-angle shots naturally carry the risk of making an actor appear smaller, especially when surrounded by physically imposing supporting actors or dominant background elements.
Devara: Part 1 follows the story of a powerful sea warrior who protects a coastal village in the 1980s that is involved in bad activities. After realising that these activities are harming innocent lives, Devara turns against his comrades, including his close friend Bhaira, triggering a violent feud. His mysterious disappearance later leaves behind a complicated legacy for his timid son, Vara.
With Jr NTR portraying both father and son, the film also stars Saif Ali Khan, Janhvi Kapoor, Prakash Raj, Srikanth, and Shine Tom Chacko in key roles. The movie is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
While the film ended on a cliffhanger and appeared to set up a sequel, Devara: Part 2 has not received any significant updates so far. As a result, it remains unclear whether the project has been shelved or is still in development.
Jr NTR’s work front
Following his appearance in War 2, Jr NTR will star in the action entertainer Dragon, directed by Prashanth Neel. The film follows Luger, a dangerous man involved in a syndicate that is preparing to face a massive crackdown.
With Rukmini Vasanth playing the female lead, the movie also stars Anil Kapoor, Biju Menon, Sidhant Gupta, and several others in key roles. The film is slated for release on June 11, 2027.
