The Plot
EXAM: The System Exposed follows the story of Jhansi, an ex-convict trained by Jayachandran to kidnap and replace DSP Maramalli, who has been stationed at Thykara. Keeping Maramalli trapped inside her own quarters, the ex-convict begins an intriguing investigation into the events surrounding a potential entrance exam scam that has harmed the lives of several students over the years.
As Jhansi connects the dots between the scams and Maramalli’s involvement, the series explores her journey as an amateur sleuth across its seven episodes. Whether she manages to uncover the truth or falls victim to the system herself forms the backbone of the show.
What works in EXAM
EXAM: The System Exposed is built on a strong concept and works effectively from a story perspective. The show has all the makings of an entertaining, edge-of-the-seat thriller, although turning it into a web series may have been excessive.
The socially relevant narrative serves as a sharp commentary and deserves appreciation for its attention to detail and efforts to maintain momentum. Certain visuals stand out, and Dushara Vijayan does her best to bring depth to the character, aided by a few supporting performances.

What doesn’t work in EXAM
The series falls short of becoming the gripping thriller it could have been due to weak narration and execution. While the story shows promise on paper, the web series struggles to sustain tension or deliver moments that truly leave the audience stunned.
The makers constantly attempt to create a sense of urgency, as though something explosive could happen at any moment. However, the tension rarely connects with viewers. Most twists and shocking moments become predictable because of the weak execution, making it easy to anticipate what is coming from a distance.
With much of the core cast delivering underwhelming performances, the show never reaches the level of intensity it aims for. Sam CS’ background score also lacks the thrill needed to elevate the experience. The editing further affects the pacing, despite each episode running for only around 30 minutes. Moreover, the coloring and DI feel overly saturated and visually monotonous, seriously asking for a change from the makers.
The Performances
Dushara Vijayan has proven herself to be a powerhouse performer in films like Vettaiyan, Sarpatta Parambarai, and Raayan. However, in this series, her performance lacks emotional depth, even though she remains the most engaging presence on screen.
Similarly, Aditi Balan, whose performance in Aruvi still feels hauntingly memorable, appears out of place here, delivering many of her scenes in a flat tone.
Even with a capable supporting cast, including Abbas trying their best to improve the pacing, the series lacks an additional layer that could have made it more engaging.
The Verdict
EXAM: The System Exposed is one of those web series that might have worked better as a feature film with a tighter, more engaging narrative. Despite its flaws, the series still offers an interesting concept and story that could appeal to many viewers.
