Is Mohanlal’s L3: Azrael still on the cards? Writer gives an update on future of Lucifer franchise

The Lucifer franchise, starring Mohanlal in the lead role, continued with its second installment, L2: Empuraan, which was released in 2025. While the third installment remains unconfirmed, the film’s writer, Murali Gopy, recently shared an update about its prospects.

Speaking to News18 Keralam, Murali Gopy revealed that he had originally conceived and written the Lucifer saga as a trilogy. He emphasized that the story would reach its intended conclusion only if the third installment is made.

While the actor-writer confirmed that a follow-up is being considered, he noted that its production will depend on the availability of time and resources.

For those unaware, L2: Empuraan is set five years after the events of Lucifer. The story follows a Kerala official Jathin Ramdas as his leadership takes a controversial turn, setting the stage for major developments.

As Khureshi-Ab'raam returns to Kerala to confront a growing threat while expanding his global network and honoring a promise made to his trusted aide Zayed Masood, the film also introduces a new international challenge, raising the stakes significantly.

The movie concludes with a cliffhanger that teases the next chapter, L3: Azrael. It also features Pranav Mohanlal as a young Ab’raam.

Apart from Mohanlal and director Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film stars Indrajith Sukumaran, Abhimanyu Singh, Tovino Thomas, Manju Warrier, Jerome Flynn, Andrea Tivadar, and Rick Yune in a special appearance.

Mohanlal’s work front

Mohanlal was last seen in the lead role in Drishyam 3. Directed by Jeethu Joseph, the film serves as the third installment in the acclaimed thriller-drama franchise, with Meena, Ansiba Haasan, Esther Anil, Murali Gopy, Asha Sarath, Kalabhavan Shajon, and Siddique reprising their roles. Following its theatrical run, the film is available for streaming on Prime Video.

The actor is currently working on his next film, Athimanoharam, directed by Tharun Moorthy. The film features Meera Jasmine as the co-lead and is expected to be released during the Ayudha Pooja season this year.

Looking ahead, Mohanlal has projects lined up with directors Vishnu Mohan, Priyadarshan, and Dileesh Pothan. He is also set to make special appearances in Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Khalifa, Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2, and his daughter Vismaya Mohanlal’s debut film, Thudakkam.
