Kalki 2 director Nag Ashwin spills the tea about Alia Bhatt casting rumors; Confirms shoot to begin from August-September 2026
Kalki 2, directed by Nag Ashwin, is the upcoming sequel to the Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan starrer, which was released in 2024.
Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan, is set to expand its universe, with the sequel already in production. As recent rumors suggested that Alia Bhatt has joined the film in a pivotal role, director Nag Ashwin has now provided some clarity on the speculation.
Nag Ashwin reacts to casting rumors around Alia Bhatt
Speaking to Great Andhra, Nag Ashwin clarified that nothing has been confirmed yet and said that if the team finalizes anything, he will make an official announcement. The filmmaker said, “We need to announce who plays the Sumathi (SUM-80) character in Kalki 2. As of now, everything is only speculation. The character will definitely be there, as it is a very important part of the story.”
Earlier, it was speculated that Alia Bhatt had already come on board the project and joined the cast during the film’s second shooting schedule. Reports also claimed that the actress shot for around five days in Hyderabad last month, and it will not be the role of Sumathi.
Recently, the director confirmed that regular shooting for the movie will begin soon. He said, “We might start the regular shoot either in August or September. That’s the update for now. Hopefully, we will work for a long stretch and complete most of the filming. Most of it has already been prepared, and the writing is done. So, it will be a much faster process.”

Kalki 2898 AD follows the journey of Ashwatthama, an immortal warrior, and Bhairava, whose paths cross in a dystopian future ruled by Supreme Yaskin. Their lives become intertwined through Sumathi, a pregnant refugee carrying a child believed to play a crucial role in shaping the future.
With Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan in the lead roles, the film featured Deepika Padukone as Sumathi. However, the makers have confirmed that the actress will not be returning for the sequel. While an official announcement is still awaited, Sai Pallavi is rumored to be taking on the role.
On the other hand, Alia Bhatt will next be seen in the spy action film Alpha, co-starring Sharvari. The movie is slated to release on July 3, 2026, with Hrithik Roshan making a cameo appearance.
