Official trailer and plot of Kara
Kara is set in the early 1990s and follows Karasaami (played by Dhanush), a small-time thief from Ramanathapuram, who DSP Bharathan catches during a failed robbery. After escaping, Kara tries to leave the world of crime behind and build a peaceful life with his wife, Selli, by starting a small mess business. However, poverty forces him to return to his village in search of land documents to secure a bank loan.
Back home, Kara reunites with his estranged family and learns that his father, Kandhasaami, is drowning in debt after taking a tractor loan. When the bank threatens to seize their ancestral land, Kandhasaami passes away with grief, and the family is even denied the right to bury him there. Humiliated by the corrupt bank manager Muthu Selvan, Kara decides to rob the bank.
With the help of Murugesan and Kasi, Kara begins targeting banks to recover money and land documents exploited from the poor. Though initially motivated by personal revenge, he gradually realises that many villagers have suffered under the same corrupt system. As DSP Bharathan investigates the robberies, Muthu Selvan secretly profits from the crimes and manipulates both the villagers and the police.
Kara eventually steals a large sum of money and uses it to help villagers repay their debts, reclaiming their lands. In the end, Muthu Selvan confesses his crimes before passing away, while Bharathan recognises that Kara’s actions were driven by injustice and not greed. The reformed thief finally fulfils his father’s wish by burying him in their ancestral land and abandons the crime world to take up agriculture.
