Karuppu helmer RJ Balaji on why he credited Suriya starrer’s success to Thalapathy Vijay: ‘Cannot randomly narrate…’

Karuppu, starring Suriya in the lead role, was released in theaters on May 15, 2026. Directed by RJ Balaji, the fantasy action entertainer emerged as a success at the box office. Following the film’s success, the director credited Thalapathy Vijay for playing a role in its journey, which sparked mixed reactions among fans. Now, he has clarified his remarks.
RJ Balaji details why he credited Thalapathy Vijay for Karuppu's success
In an interaction with Cineulagam, the director said, “I got access to Suriya sir because Thalapathy Vijay sir listened to this story. Suriya sir is a big superstar; you cannot randomly narrate a story to him. When Dream Warrior Pictures called, they asked, ‘Can you narrate the story to Suriya sir that you narrated to Thalapathy Vijay sir?’ So, somewhere, he's in a special place in my heart, even though we didn't do a film together.”
He further added, “Whatever my life is today is because of Suriya sir. But the first door was opened by Vijay sir. So, that meeting with him was very special. He even told my wife how good the script was.”
RJ Balaji also revealed that he had come close to collaborating with Thalapathy Vijay, but the project did not materialize due to scheduling constraints.
For those unaware, the filmmaker recently met Vijay following the success of Karuppu. Sharing a post on social media, he mentioned that the film’s journey had begun because Vijay had listened to the story at an early stage.

Karuppu follows a father and daughter who travel to Chennai so that the latter can undergo surgery. However, while spending the night at a railway station, they lose the gold they intended to sell to cover the medical expenses.
Although the gold is eventually recovered, they find themselves facing a series of challenges led by Baby Kannan. Desperate for help, the father prays to the guardian deity Karuppusamy, who takes human form to assist them and bring about positive change. The film concludes with an epilogue that hints at a sequel titled Karuppu vs Vellai.
Apart from Suriya, the film also stars Trisha Krishnan, RJ Balaji, Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Natarajan Subramaniam, Swasika, and Sshivada in key roles. The film is currently available for streaming on Prime Video.
