For those unaware, RJ Balaji recently confirmed in an interview that the film was initially pitched to Thalapathy Vijay and was being considered as the superstar’s final cinematic venture. However, the actor later opted for Jana Nayagan instead, and Karuppu eventually went to Suriya.
Karuppu tells the story of a father and daughter who travel to Chennai so that the latter can undergo surgery. However, during the night at a railway station, the duo is robbed of the gold they intend to sell to cover the medical expenses.
Although the gold is eventually recovered, they are forced to confront a group led by a lawyer named Baby Kannan and are unable to reclaim it. Desperate for help, the father prays to the guardian deity Karuppusamy, who takes human form to assist them and reform the system.
With Suriya in the lead role, the film also stars Trisha Krishnan, RJ Balaji, Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Natarajan Subramaniam, Swasika, and Sshivada in key roles.
