‘Karuppu was supposed to be Thalapathy Vijay’s last film,’ director RJ Balaji spills details about Suriya’s actioner
Karuppu is the latest action fantasy entertainer, starring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan in the lead roles.
Suriya starrer Karuppu was released in theatres on May 15, 2026. Directed by RJ Balaji, the fantasy action entertainer has been creating quite a buzz at the box office, with a generally positive response from critics and fans. Now, in an interview, the director himself has revealed that Karuppu was initially pitched to Thalapathy Vijay as his grand finale film.
Suriya’s Karuppu was initially meant for Thalapathy Vijay
In an interaction with The Hollywood Reporter India, RJ Balaji said, “This was supposed to be his (Thalapathy Vijay’s) last film, so we had two or three meetings over a period of time, discussing things and deciding which film to make as his final project.”
The actor-director added, “I felt his reasons were justified. I said, ‘Sir, I absolutely respect your decision. Thank you so much,’ because by that time, I had narrated two films to him after he asked me if I had something. I thought it was a huge sign of respect for my work and creativity.”
In conclusion, the filmmaker said that the entire thing had happened because Vijay had asked him the right questions after the narration, questions that had made the film and the script better. He added that even though Vijay did not do the film, it ultimately led him to this project.
RJ Balaji further conveyed that when producers later asked him to narrate the same script to Suriya, the Retro star loved it and agreed to act in it.

Karuppu follows the story of Binu, a young girl, and her father, who travel to Chennai so that she can undergo surgery. However, during the night at a railway station, the duo is robbed of the gold they intended to sell to cover the medical expenses.
Although the gold is eventually recovered, they are forced to confront bad people led by Baby Kannan. Desperate for help, the father prays to the guardian deity Karuppusamy, who takes human form to help them and reform the system. The film concludes with an epilogue hinting at a sequel titled Karuppu vs Vellai.
Apart from Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, the film also stars RJ Balaji, Indrans, Anagha Maya Ravi, Natarajan Subramaniam, Swasika, and Sshivada in key roles.
