In a blow to the cinema industry and theatres, the Karnataka government announced on Tuesday that a full occupancy in theatres cannot be permitted, though the government approved full occupancy in marriage halls and so on. This comes after the central government approved a full occupancy in theatres across the country from February 1. The state government of Karnataka’s revised order stated that the cinema halls will run with 50 percent occupancy till the end of this month.

It is to be noted that the state government of Karnataka has permitted hotels and restaurants to operate at full seating and allows swimming pools to operate as per central government guidelines. Following this announcement, KGF director Prashanth Neel has taken to his Twitter space and posted a photo demanding the approval of full occupancy in the theatres of Karnataka. He wrote, “While cinema is entertainment to most, it's lifeline to many.”

He stated that he would meet the Chief Minister of Karnataka and discuss the issue along with other members of the industry. It is to be noted that Tamil Nadu’s government has permitted 100 percent occupancy in theaters, while the other three southern states namely Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala are expected to permit a full capacity in theatres soon.
